Will RIM release this 10-inch PlayBook?

by on July 30, 2012

Either the man holding that PlayBook has incredibly small hands, or the device he’s holding is a much larger PlayBook than the one currently in production. The photo, along with others comparing it with the 7-inch PlayBook, appeared on the blog tinhte, which we found by way of Engadget.

We have heard rumors of a 10-inch PlayBook, but we also later heard that RIM was scrapping that project to focus on the 7-inch PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. Might they have had a change of heart? Or is this a prototype that made its way into the hands of a Vietnamese blogger?

The Canadian mobile blog Mobile Syrup received information last week that suggests a new PlayBook will launch tomorrow, July 31st. Given what we can see of the supposed internal email, the upgrades include a more powerful processor and 4G LTE connectivity. We’re one day away from this launch date, and have yet to hear any official word.

It seemed odd at first, since RIM is presumably harder at work on other projects. It seems odder now. Of course, nowhere in the description does it mention a 10-inch screen. You’d think that would be a prominent advertising point. Consumers are more likely to react to screen size than processor power, or even 4G LTE connectivity.

In any case, Mobile Syrup relayed some specs, and they’re all based on a 7-inch device. So we can pretty much rule out any 10-inch shenanigans for tomorrow. The only question is of whether we can rule out all shenanigans. I’d bet against any new PlayBook launching tomorrow. There just doesn’t seem to be much behind the rumor.

Then again, since it seems that the PlayBook has sold better in Canada, perhaps this version is reserved for those carriers. Perhaps we’ll hear something later today that clarifies the matter.
