Using your BlackBerry PlayBook in the car

by on October 6, 2011

Are there any must-have accessories for the BlackBerry PlayBook? I’ve been searching around for essentials, but it’s been a mostly fruitless search. If you look at an Amazon search sorted by popularity, you’ll see a preponderance of cases, ranging from laptop-style ones to simple sleeves. (My personal favorite: the Leather Envelope case, as though anyone has any practical use for that.)

One item that did catch my fancy, though, was a car mount. We already discussed car mounts for your BlackBerry, but those were for BlackBerry smartphones. Yet the PlayBook can perform many of the same functions, and perhaps some more, while you’re in the car. There is quite a solid-looking car mount available for it, too.

When you’re the only one in the car, a GPS application is probably the only useful one. That could be turn-by-turn directions or something like Yelp, which helps you find particular restaurants or businesses in your current area. Anything else is probably a bit too user-intensive for car use. Think of your PlayBook, then, as an oversized GPS. It’s certainly preferable to the undersized GPS that is your BlackBerry smartphone.

It’s when there are passengers that you can get even more use out of the PlayBook. Kids in the back seat? Keep them quiet by playing them a video. Want your teenager to take out the ear buds and maybe even — gasp — talk to you? They can take advantage of video, too. There are definitely uses, and I’m sure that you road warriors can come up with plenty more. All you need is the window mount. The RAM twist lock suction mount is a high quality one.

It claims to not only hold your PlayBook in place, but also absorb shock as to prolong the life of the device. With anything as expensive as a tablet, device maintenance is a must. The shock absorption helps provide peace of mind. It also appears to be a durable product itself, which is essential for any car mount.

Anyone who has had a car mount break knows what I’m talking about.

It’s a bit pricey, but if you want to mount your PlayBook on your dashboard it’s the way to go. You can get the RAM twist lock mount for $54.68.

If you prefer a more familiar brand, the BBGeeks Store also carriers an iGrip window mount. Unfortunately, that’s currently out of stock. When it becomes available you can get the iGrip PlayBook mount for $47.95.
