Yesterday, we talked about the current 3G iPhone shortage. It seems that most Apple and AT&T stores are down to their last few models, or else are completely sold out. Good for Apple, bad for anyone who wanted to wait it out and get one after the lines had cleared. On their earnings call, they addressed the issue, saying that “demand has been staggering,” and also noting that the U.S. is the only country in which it miscalculated demand. The company plans to release the device in 20 more countries on August 22. Does that mean that they’ll have a replenishment for the U.S. supply at that point? Only they know, I suppose. The London School of Economics’ Media and Communications department conducted a study to measure the use of social networking sites by mobile Internet users. It seems that only a quarter actually check their MySpace, Facebook, whathaveyou, on their mobile. This in comparison to 43 percent who check their email wirelessly. This could be due to the medium’s newness, or it could be due to a general indifference towards social networking in the UK. In any case, while it sounds intuitive that people would use the uber-personal medium of social networking on the uber-personal cell phone, it doesn’t appear to be happening yet, at least on a widespread level. The behemoth that is Verizon added a net 1.5 million customers in the second quarter, moving its total retail customers to 66.7 million. They have 68.7 million overall, but the 66.7 are those whom they directly serve, and likely the number they’ll be comparing with AT&T. It shouldn’t be long before we see that number jump by 12 or 13 million, when they finally absorb Alltel. Speaking of Verizon, they’re set to offer cellular service in the subway. The article makes it seem like this service, already provided by U.S. Cellular, is available when the train is moving underground. Chicago residents: Is this the case? If so, I can only imagine being bitterly annoyed when riding a train there.
