With 34 million customers, T-Mobile is the fourth largest wireless carrier in America, ranking behind Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon. It is the U.S. arm of German wireless conglomerate Deutsche Telekom. Through the years T-Mobile has changed marketing and business tactics in order to attract more customers in the face of fierce competition. In 2011 AT&T agreed to acquire T-Mobile, but the plan failed to pass regulatory muster. In 2012 prepaid carrier MetroPCS agreed to a merger with T-Mobile, which is still pending.
