Alltel suffers hour-long outage

by on December 7, 2007

Normally, a cell outage might not be news. Sure it is for BlackBerry users. But for the rest of us, we expect a little downtime. An hour, though, is a bit much. And having it happen for the second time in less than 30 days is simply unacceptable. Yet that’s what Alltel customers in Nebraska have faced. They had another outage on November 9. So what’s to it?

Alltel spokesman Dale Ingram said the outage likely resulted from a drastic increase in call volume following the shootings at Omaha’s Westroads Mall. “Our engineers are working very hard to resolve the situation,” he said. “We believe the problem is based in a software or hardware issue in Omaha.” If true, that’s a shame. It would also take some of the blame off Alltel, since these events are not exactly expected, and it’s tough to immediately boost the signal in the service area. [News Net Nebraska]

Yeah, well, they’re service is down right now in Nebraska and has been for at least an hour. How can they seriously run a company like this? I’m switching.
