T-Mobile Halted US Cupcake Due to Security Concerns

by on May 22, 2009

Seems there was a security concern with the Android CupCake update before it could be sent out by T-Mobile over the air (OTA) to US G1 phones.

T-Mobile stated earlier this week that they are delaying the new Android release to the US which was already behind this same update already sent out to those in the UK.

Apparently those that already updated their G1 to the CupCake release outside the US or manually are receiving a security patch update for the 1.5 Firmware directly from Google.

Google And Blog reader Abdel has reported that he received this update in Egypt and after he has noticed his G1 became noticeably slower.

New items he found after the security update:

  • System Tutorial -  A step by step tutorial on how to use your Android Phone
  • Tactile feedback – when setting the pattern to unlock your phone it will vibrate each time you touch a dot

Hopefully this will all be ironed out when Cupcake is FINALLY released from Guantanamo and enters the US – no reports on if it was waterboarded.

Although I’m impatient, I’m not sure why. I may just be bored. I’d really like to see better battery life. Any word on running apps from the SD card?

If it was due to security concerns, I completely understand. And, I’m also extremely grateful that they didn’t just drop a faulty update on us. Patience is a virtue. As long as it works when I recieve it I’m fine. This update isn’t even really that big when you think about it… When Flash, if ever, comes out it’ll be crazy (that’ll be the day I cry when the release date is pushed) As of now, It’s all good. = )

I find that milk goes better with cupcakes than water. Perhaps they will milkboard the update? Sorry… your cheesiness bred mine. Speaking of bread and cheese, maybe that can be the name of 3.0 firmware? Moving from sweets to real food could eliminate these release issues.

i agree with u kimberly, keep these frivilous updates, give me a flash player.

mailman1387 May 23, 2009 at 9:51 am

They can’t give you flash player because that’s owned by Adobe not Google.

@Christopher
I have Cupcake (root) and it doesn’t allow apps2sd at this time.I have apps2sd via root but based on how its done the root way i would guess apps2sd isnt coming via google for atleast another year or on Donut.Google moves slow plus the way to do it via root requires partitioning your SD so at this point they would have to give you a rooted walkthrough or get a contract with a SDcard company and have the company sell ready made partition SDcards (In my opinion based on how its done through root).

Oh i also forgot to mention that Adobe “promised” they would bring flash to us by the end of 2009 and seeing how fast the first half of year went by i think its not that long to wait.My guess is mid fall and not during the summer.

I just updated to cupcake manually with the download now available on the net. It is great! You just save it to your SD card (same as instructions to manually updating to RC33). One thing not mentioned to me was that we can finally clear the market cache!

Plenty of other features check it out for yourself. http://www.fonearena.com/blog/2009/05/24/download-google-android-os-15-cupcake-now-tested-and-working.html

So I went ahead with manual update via the above link…
This website now doesn’t recognize the browser as mobile… I’m getting the full huge version on my (comparatively) little screen.
It’s nice to have one website that doesn’t force the mobile site on mobile browsers tho. Have you guys seen nbc.com?

Also, I can’t wait to hear (probably here, soon) why it was a silly idea to update manually. Lol

This website now loads the non-mobile version, now that I updated manually.

Nobody mentioned the browser icon would change! Gasp!

@Ernie,

Do you know what the new Browser User Agent is after the upgrade?

This is why its not being adjusted to the Mobile version which normally you can manually disable by scrolling to the bottom and turn off the Mobile theme.

I actually like not always being pushed into the mobile version of sites. Regardless aren’t most sites easily converted to mobile? Usually you just type in an m. Right before the actual url. It’s getting the reg site that’s tricky on the phone. Can’t wait for the update then. Is cupcake rolling out today?

Should be but I have come to the point of ending the waiting game and doing it manually.

I renamed the update to update.zip and placed on the root of the SD card via USB but the file disappears after unmounting.

I dont have a microSD card converter to directly upload using my laptop’s SD port – should have that tomorrow unless anyone else has other means of successfully updating it.

Overall the new update is really good. Everything looks so different, but in a VERY good way.

The home screens are the same, theres nothing really new except the widget capabilities. The auto-rotate is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO slow. I have OpenHome and i am sticking with it.

KimberlySy May 25, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Should I keep ahome? Are the home screens any better Justin?

Reply

KimberlySy May 25, 2009 at 8:11 pm

Yea I saw a vid of the auto rotate… it does this weird zoom out box thing then pops in place. It couldve been more smoother if they just kept it simple… I guess I’ll stick with ahome if the widgets aren’t that great.

There is a bunch of new features, not just widgets. And the auto-rotate isn’t the one that is a windows zoomed out, it just blurs for 1 second and rotates. It is pretty quick from my experience with it. The phone is way faster overall.

My fingers are kinda big for the on screen keyboard -.- but i found a app better keyboard its way better. when you update make sure you go to settings>display options> then turn transitions on.

KimberlySy May 26, 2009 at 11:56 am

yea there are… but as for the home screens there are only widget and live folders that’s new. The updates to the overall phone are plenty though = ). I would like more home custumizations that don’t require a trip to the market and a big bite out of my memory…

Well I got tired of waiting so I just update manually..really easy process but u have to be careful not to brick your phone.some of the new features that I’ve noticed is a new overall smoother look to the notification bar and the applications bar.Another thing I noticed was the ability to copy text from a website(just press menu>more>select text and then just go over what you want to copy with your finger)..this feature is pretty cool….the camera is the same quality I guess but it does take the pictures faster after it focuses..all of the applications that come with the phone(I.e. messaging, alarm clock, contacts, browser, camera) just have a nicer look to it in my opinion. Overall its just better..I like it..the on-screen keyboard I’ve used it more than I thought I would and the camcorder isn’t bad for the quality of the pictures that the camera takes….

Yea your right. I think I was thinking back on some other developer’s video on his new version of “cupcake”. You know the hack for root users? Sorry I just mixed them up. The transitions were a bbit different

I got cupcake (android 1.5) last night sometime, I had the update message when I awoke at 5am. I must say that it seems a bit different than the videos I’ve seen. Its no way to control the animation speed, the screen rotation does not work in all 4 directions, the home sceen does not auto rotate, & the blur effect is used when screen rotates instead of the zoom out/zoom in animation I saw in videos. The UI does look alot more polished but im no so sure I like the changes to call log. It cuts off the last 2 digits of the phone number if an area code is used. But over all I like it

Yea.. I saw the same videos! Talk about misleading… Oh well.
