T-Mobile G1 Android 1.5 Cupcake Release Schedule

by on May 14, 2009

The release schedule of the Android 1.5 CupCake update being transmitted Over The Air (OTA) to T-Mobile G1 owners in the US has been leaked.

The initial rollout of the CupCake update has started today Thursday, May 14th reaching only a lucky .1% or 1/10% G1 owners.

The below numbers are what T-Mobile anticipates the reach of the CupCake OTA over time:

  • Monday, May 18th – 5%
  • Tuesday, May 19th – 15%
  • Wednesday, May 20th – 30%
  • Thursday, May 21st – 45%
  • Friday, May 22nd – 60%
  • Saturday, May 23rd – 75%
  • Sunday, May 24th – 90%
  • Monday, May 25th – 100%

So well before June ALL G1 owners will have a taste of Cupcake on their phone and any new G1s will get cupcaked within three days after activation.

*** PLEASE Comment in this post once you get the T-Mobile CupCake OTA update ***

This doesn’t make sense: how does it affect “only a lucky 10% G1 owners” on Thursday May 14th, while only affecting 5% by Monday May 18th?…
Was it meant that “only a lucky 1% G1 owners” would receive the updated on May 14th?
Also, what about the slow ramping up: 5% over the first 5 days, then 10% Monday-Tuesday, 15% the next following days until 100% is covered?…

its .1% so 1/10%

They release like this so they can monitor the stability of the release incrementally, rather than taking down the entire G1 user base all at once should anything go wrong. I say this from 15 years doing software development.

So what happened to the weekend? How can we be sure that this list is “official” anyway? I don’t see why T-mobile would skip on the weekend opportunity where there would likely be less data traffic. Didn’t the last update go through the weekend?

Reply

ddd May 14, 2009 at 10:26 pm

it is going to be rolled out during the weekend..what i think michael is saying is that it started being distributed on may 14th and by monday may 18th 5% of G1 users will have their updates..hopefully im one of those people…lol

You know, when Apple announces updates, everybody eagerly awaits their updates the same way, and then people start to get impatient because they heard from this person who posted it on this site that the update would be out at this time. For everything that T-Mobile has said about the update, they have followed it to a T. All of the rumors that said January, February, March, April, none of those were T-Mobile or Google stated times. Google made one incorrect statement of saying first quarter 2009, they are not off by much on that. The thing about this week is silly because last week T-Mobile said end of next week (this week) and everyone started saying (T-Mobile didn’t) May 11 which is the BEGINNING of the week. So it is the end of the week and it should be coming out soon… based on T-Mobile’s statement of the end of the week, the first update doesn’t need to come out until Saturday. So switch to the iPhone, but you will have more of the same.

At least with Android you can head to XDA and install Cupcake yourself! With the iPhone you have no choice but to wait and get what crumbs Apple gives you…

I’ve been running Cupcake for a month thanks to the Devs at XDA!

Hope someone posts a link to the update file.
People the UK G1 users had the link to the update in a very short time.

Exactly what I read, it’s rolling through the dates, not stopping over the weekend. The incremental thing probably has criteria set up to push them out at those percentages or based on some poll that tells them the average amount of folks that will be accepting the upgrade. And yes the last update was on a weekend.

Reply

kimberlysy May 15, 2009 at 11:31 am

So, I guess I can only hope to be one of the lucky 5%. I’ll probably get it by this weekend. Last time… as soon as RC33 hit, I got it the night of. Maybe new yorkers might get lucky again.

ddd May 15, 2009 at 1:31 pm

yeah i hope us new yorkers will get lucky too..do u think its because we are in a 3g zone??..i still havent gotten my update…ill post when i get it…

I expect to get it around next Friday (May 22, 2009). If the reason they are releasing it so slow is to test if anything goes wrong, then I will gladly wait.

I wonder if the AnyCut “Device Info” thing will work. That is how I got RC33 pretty early, not by waiting for it to be pushed.

Oh, and I don’t think that whole “System Update” button works in the settings cause if you look at the edge/3g logo you see that there is no downloading or uploading going on. But there is with the “Device Info” method.

For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about, the “Device Info” thing I am talking about is a shortcut you create with AnyCut/BeterCut. It is under activity, then scroll down to device info. Place it on your home screen and then click on it. Then scroll all the way down and you’ll see the “Check for upgrade” button. Press that and your phone will actually check something, as verified by the uploading/downloading.

The Poet May 15, 2009 at 7:42 pm

hey david,

thats a neat trick. i’m going to start checking now every now and then to see if it works.

Reply

David May 18, 2009 at 7:47 am

Tried this. While I DID get updates for a few apps, no Cupcake was found.

Although I think this post makes sense. The reality of frustration is posts like this, that sound credible but come from some unverifiable leak.

If I hear iphone one more time in the whines of these posts I think I will slap someone. Let’s be realistic. The iphone is but expensive nearly all iphone lovers end up buying more than one because they strategically get them to only sortof update.

Android is for logical people that want cool, functional and not over marketed toys

In response to Tony:

“They release like this so they can monitor the stability of the release incrementally, rather than taking down the entire G1 user base all at once should anything go wrong. I say this from 15 years doing software development.”

I don’t understand why they need to do it incrementally when it has already been out in full force in the UK. Shouldn’t they have an idea by now of how it will affect the G1 user base?

Reply

kimberlysy May 15, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Well, it is a different country… So, maybe that’s why. And, I believe they had a different update system and didn’t actually get the same exact update as we did last time. Also, you know how the zip of their update can’t be used on phones, here in the states, well, that kinda shows the difference too. So, problems would most likely rise differently. I’m just guessing though = )

I don’t get it ..are they going by states, names, or they just going random ? Hope iam in the first few :) ..living in new york.

Well I call BS on this article and the other article. First the rollout was suppose to happen the week of the 11, well thats now dead and gone now it next week. Wait hold on let me predict, it will be the week after and next. So far its the 16th and not one confirmed report of cupcake. T-mobile always dragging their feet. They need to ditch the ota stuff and let people downloaded it by pressing the system update button which in my opinion is useless because its always up to date and the only updates we get are ota when they are authorized by t-mobile for that phone. Waste I say…and yes I am bitter.

I just don’t believe all this fuss over a cupcake. Never in my adult life did I expect to be this hype over a cupcake. Every morn I run to my g1 with great anticipation. Christmas all over again……my little butter cup…I’ve gone completely cupcake crazy….lol

Reply

Malcolm May 16, 2009 at 11:26 am

Teddy, i have read it takes about 20 mb of space for the OTA update which is why posed the question on this site. i’ve begun clearing apps in anticipation.

Reply

David May 16, 2009 at 11:46 am

I don’t think that the update will be stored in the same memory as the applications are. I think they have a special reserve for system updates and the like.

I have heard that the update is like 43MB for the developers so that might answer some questions. I am not going to clear up 43MB cause that would mean deleting a whole bunch of great apps!

You guys shouldn’t worry too much about space cause like I said before it probably is storing somewhere else that is reserved or on the memory card.

Also, I think that the roll out is going to be somewhat random. Oh yeah, for those people getting frustrated because of no cupcake, just wait until AT LEAST Monday because according to this post that is when some people should have it. Don’t try to go against the law of probability. .1% is almost like getting upset over not winning the lotto. Hahaha well you get the point.

Cupcake should be rolling out soon. Its already been out in the UK for about a week.. its only matter of time before it launches in the US. The update is roughly 44 MB. Should take about 1 min over my Wifi connection. Woo. I love having 7MBPS connection. =D anyone have the optic fiber connection? I’m thinking of switching over for that 20mbps goodiness.

And Peeps don’t stress about the update.. by the end of the month we’ll all be happy campers enjoying a piece of the delicous cupcake. Yumm. Haha.

1. Yes, I have had Android 1.5 (cupcake) for weeks now in texas.
2. Yes, I am typing this from the on-screen keyboard.
3. No, I did not wait for over the air (OTA) update.
4. Yes, it was nowhere near as simple as OTA.
5. Yes, my phone has root.

I would like to say I think over the air updates are really easy and a pretty neet feature even iphones don’t do. I don’t understand why so many people act so impaitent but don’t do anything about it on one of the most open smartphone platforms yet.

Read the manual, install the update that been out all month, or wait in line for OTA like the rest. Please just don’t act like you don’t have a choice, unless you have an iPhone (just kidding the Apple fan$). ;P

Cupcake is 35MB in space.I’ve had it via root for a month now and even on root you need to do apps2sd because after cupcake on root with a clean factory wipe my phone memory still went down to 39MB before i could install any apps.Root is the way people lol.

I am starting to think this “Roll out map” deal is fraud. If it was supposed to start Friday, May 14th, then how come no one has reported recieveing the update? I recieved RC33 on a Saturday evening around 6pm so i know they send out updates over the weekend so why hasnt anyone reported getting on in past 3 days? I KNOW cupcake is coming but I believe this time table to be made up

Looks like T-Mobile has bamboozed us. On the same fourm page they annouced that cupcake will be available the week of May 11th, they have recanted saying “it will be delayed for another week”. This truly sucks! Looks like Tmobile has dropped the ball once again. Click the link to read the official statement. http://forums.t-mobile.com/tmbl/board/message?board.id=Android_MR&thread.id=1

Just got this from the tmobile site Im Done checking For Updates “when it comes it comes”

G1 community,

We’d like to provide an update on the rollout of Android 1.5 for T-Mobile G1 customers.
We are working diligently to get Android 1.5 out as soon as possible, while aiming to ensure a consistent, positive experience for our customers. We’re finalizing the build this week to ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery. Therefore, the rollout schedule has been reset by approximately a week, and we expect all G1 customers will have the update by early June.

Your device will notify you when the update is available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Something weird happened today??? last week I manually put android 1.5UK version on my phone and a couple of hours ago i got an update message my build went from CRB17 to CRB43 and its a lil faster. I think I’m going to stick with the UK version since they get there updates faster…

I’m in the UK and got the 1.5 update OTA 3 weeks ago build was CRB17. Today another system update was available OTA and build is now CRB43. I agree it’s now a little faster but not much.

The updates are based off the IMEI code, it doesn’t care where your from or who you are… some people have rooted or gotten from dev sites… but for the normal users who aren’t as experienced or tech savvy… they simply wait and when their IMEI number falls into the next spot on the increment. You can enjoy your sweet Cupcake V1.5 update.
