Day in Android 3/7/11: Market share, Nexus S 4G, Thunderbolt, Galaxy Pro

by on March 7, 2011

So much today. Where to start?

We could go with this image. It’s comScore’s top smartphone platforms report. Will you look at that? Android jumped 7.7 points from the October 2010 period to gain 31.2 percent of the smartphone market share. Combined with a 5.4 point dip from RIM, that leaves Android in the lead. There are probably some metrics that have Android still in second or third, but we knew that at some point this year it would take the lead. Now is as good a time as any. [Engadget] We know Sprint has some big things planned for CTIA. They’ve been hinting at it and hinting at it, driving us insane with their unnecessary cliffhangers. (That is, their constant cliffhanger barrage is driving me insane, not the suspense caused by those cliffhangers.) As expected, details have leaked ahead of time. We’re looking at the Nexus S 4G which, of course, contains a WiMax radio. There is word that it might not be stock Gingerbread, though, which would make it a disappointment. We might also see the EVO 3D and/or the EVO View, which is a tablet device. It sounds like Spring is going Android-heavy this year. [Engadget] If we’re to believe the leaked image above, it would appear that the Thunderbolt won’t make its rumored March 10 appearance. We had heard March 4 previously, but that came and went with nothing. The 10th is the next on the rumored list, but since the iPad hits on the 11th, and the Thunderbolt comes after the iPad in this image — and since Verizon probably wants to promote the iPad heavily upon launch — chances are that next week is the earliest we’ll see the device. In other Thunderbolt news, it showed up in a Best Buy circular for $300 on contract. That’s considerably more expensive than we’re used to seeing smartphones. [Droid Life] [Engadget Mobile] That’s an…interesting looking device. Stubby, if nothing else. Anyway, it’s the Samsung Galaxy Pro, which is the company’s take on the touchscreen/QWERTY style handset. It’s not the fastest at just 800MHz, and that keyboard does not look like the best in the biz. But it does come with Froyo. For those craving the QWERTY but don’t like the slider, this could be the answer. Three UK is going to carry it, and it could be heading elsewhere soon. [again, Engadget] Quickies
  • If you’ve unlocked your Motorola Xoom, fret not. Motorola will still give you the LTE upgrade. It also appears that a WiFi Xoom will hit Staples in early April. [Android Central] [Phandroid]
  • T-Mobile could be getting the LG Optimus 2X, which will be known as the T-Mobile G2X. [Android Guys]
  • If you have a rooted Motorola Atrix, you can dock it to an HDMI monitor or TV, rather than the expensive laptop dock. [Android Police]
