Day in Android 2/23/11: Galaxy S 4G, Atrix, Captivate Froyo

by on February 23, 2011

Why yes, that is the Galaxy S 4G, and yes, it is available now from T-Mobile. The relevant details are right there in front of you. You can pay $500 and take it home sans contract, but if you’d rather take T-Mobile’s discount, in exchange for a two-year commitment, you can get it for the standard smartphone price of $199.99. Unfortunately, it ships with Android 2.2, which means we could see the same upgrade issues as we have with the original Galaxy S series. One can only pray that that history won’t repeat itself. [Engadget] Yesterday, after we went to press, the Froyo update for a Galaxy S handset, AT&T’s Captivate, was leaked. It felt like another in a long line of teases. But fret not, Captivate owners. Relief is on the way. Not 24 hours after the leak, AT&T came out and said that they’re dropping the official 2.2 tomorrow. From the way they worded it, it doesn’t appear to be an OTA update. But in any case, Captivate owners have to be ecstatic that they’re finally getting Froyo. [Android Central] What you see there is the innards of the Motorola Atrix. As always, the folks at iFixit broke down the device to its components and laid it out for us all to see. Meanwhile, Kevin Tofel of jkOnTheRun reviews the Atrix and the laptop dock. He finds one to be excellent, the other to be lacking. One guess as to which is which. [iFixit] [jkOnTheRun] Quickies

  • Google has decided to separate Facebook contacts from phone contacts in the latest Gingerbread release (2.3.3). This is to avoid confusion, as your Facebook contacts are stored in the cloud and thus do not transfer with a backup. [Phone Scoop]
  • Super AMOLED: 50 percent more subpixels than regular, boring AMOLED. [IntoMobile]
