BlackBerry Storm unlocked for T-Mobile in U.S.?

by on November 28, 2008

When there comes a new device, there come hackers who want to use all of its capabilities. We saw this last summer with the unlocking on the original iPhone. The BlackBerry Storm presents an excellent hacking opportunity because of its dual radios. Get the GSM radio working, and you might be able to get it up on T-Mobile or AT&T in the U.S. It appears that one Howard Forum member was able to get it done. A little description after the jump. It actually doesn’t sound all that complicated. Verizon hands out unlock codes if you’re headed to Europe and want to use another carrier’s SIM, so you just call them up and tell them that. They’ll send you an email trying to dissuade you, but you can just say “that’s okay, I want my unlock code,” and they’ll give it to you. After you get the code, you have to download the T-Mobile (or AT&T, I guess) service books. There are three additional steps as well. You can find instructions here. After you follow them, you should be up and running on T-Mobile’s 2G network (sorry, no 3G). The Howard user even says his VZNavigator works when he’s on T-Mobile. He also notes that you can switch between networks. As of now I have no Storm, thus no way of confirming this. Anyone give it a try? If you do, leave a comment and let us know how it goes.

Important note- 2G *only*.

I’ve found T-Mobile’s 2G network (GPRS) to be near-unusable. Quite often, I can’t get a BIS connection over their GPRS network, so only apps that can use a direct TCP connection will function. And very slowly.

This is cool from a pure techie perspective, but I wouldn’t call this a practical solution. Especially since Verizon won’t allow WiFi on their devices to mitigate this problem.

Since it’s dual band will it work with sprint if unlocked? Also i heard the vondafone version would be easier to accomplish the at&t t-mobile sim swap.

weston December 1, 2008 at 2:11 pm

If the storm runs on T-mobile’s 2G network is it going to have the same speeds as the curve? or is it going to be slower? is it still EDGE?

Reply

Mii December 8, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Twenty: From what I’ve read/heard, Sprint will not let you activate any phone that isn’t Sprint branded. So, no, even if you get the Storm unlocked you will not be successful trying to get Storm working on Sprint. Sorry.

Weston: 2G is EDGE so it’ll be just as fast as your Curve. Keep in mind T-Mobile’s been working on converting some of their bigger markets to 3G, some of them already are 3G. The Storm is 3G capable so if you’re in one of T-Mobile’s big markets you should have 3G connection… If you’re as unlucky as I am and live in the boondocks, you will not get to enjoy T-Mobile’s 3G for YEARS to come. Yup.

MII and Twenty,

I’m a sprint user and have called tech support recently asking if it were possible to use an unlocked phone on there network. The technician explained that the phone I wanted to try was not compatible with there network, but offered to try if I wanted to. I did not have the phone so I did not try. He was willing to try for me though. I’ve been thinking about trying to get a strom to try it but it’s a bit expensive to simply “try” to see if it works.

if you switch it to att can you use the 3g internet like if i took a iphone 3gs sim card and put it in the blackberry would it have the 3g internet

Reply

Pete December 14, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Okay the even if you unlock the storm to work on tmobiles 2g edge network it will NOT work on their 3g since the storm does not have the correct frequency bands (1700/2100)but will work as fast as the curve on edge.

Hi Will,

The Verizon Blackberry Storm 9530 is a CDMA phone, but is also has Quad Band GSM Coverage built in.

This, when the phone is unlocked will allow you to use it on any GSM network in the world

just get an unlock code from verizon, if they refuse to give you one, you can buy one from us.

enter it and your phone will be permanently unlocked to work with any GSM network including T-mobile.

Regards,

Alen

I just chatted with someone on the Verizon website and they told me that the storm would work on other networks. I was specifically asking if it would work if I just put my sim card from my t mobile phone into the storm. And I asked her 2 times and both times she told me yes it will work and yes the storm will work on other networks. I would like to know if this is true before I purchase the storm.

To get a blackberry storm unlocked just find some unlocking services near you. Like some call phone shops. I got my blackberry storm 9530 unlocked. So it’s possbile don’t go through like verizon they lie about everything lol. It’s possible. O and make sure if you do get you storm unlocked that it’s permante becuz some people unlock it and when you update it the storm goes back to normal settings then you have to redo the whole unlocking. So be sure that the unlocking will last forever.

i also just got the storm from my cousin, and when i put my card in it says “invalid sim card” do you have to pay for a code everywhere?

Reply

Cooper April 3, 2009 at 12:08 pm

the storm is locked to a network other than the one the sim card is tied to or your sim card is defective.

Check with your local provider to see if the phone is compatible. If it is not, you will have to have it unlocked before you can use that sim card in it.

I HAVE THE 9530, AND I HAVE EVERYTHING WORKING ON IT, IF YOU HAVE AN UNLOCKED STORM, MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS.

1ST CHANGE MOBILE NETWORK SETTINGS TO EITHER 3G &2G OR TO GLOBAL (USES MORE BATTERY) DO NOT SET IT TO 2G ONLY, YOUR EDGE SIGNAL WILL SUCK.
YOU WANT YOUR PHONE TO SAY “EDGE” ALL CAPS, NOT edge, ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A T-MOBILE/ATT BB DATA PLAN BIS, BECAUSE OF NOT, THE STORM WILL NOT PICK UP THE INTERNET FOR YOU, IT ONLY PICKS UP IF YOU HAVE A BB DATA PLAN (ONLY)AND YOU WILL NOT SEE THE BROWSER ICON AT ALL.

2. YOUR APN SETTINGS SHOULD BE WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM

3. TO CHANGE THE NUMBER YOU NEED TO DIAL ##000000, THEN PUT YOUR NUMBER AT THE TOP LINE HIT THE MENU KEY AND SAVE IT, YOUR PHONE WILL REBOOT ON ITS OWN.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS EMAIL ME DIRECTLY awilliams924 at gmail dot com

TMOBILE ON BLACKBERRY STORM April 4, 2009 at 10:00 pm

correction: APN SETTINGS WAS FOR T-MOBILE ONLY, GOOGLE FOR AT&T APN SETTINGS, ALSO IF YOU HAVE T-MOBILE, GO TO THE T-MO WEBSITE, REQUEST THE SERVICE BOOKS TO BE PUSHED TO YOUR DEVICE, REQUEST SERVICE BOOKS FOR THE 8900, THEY WORK PERFECT FOR MY PHONE, NO ISSUES, YOU CAN ALSO USE GENERIC T-MO SERVICE BOOKS, JUST A LOT OF READING IS NEEDED, IF YOU WANT YOUR PHONE TO WORK PROPERLY.

The BlackBerry Storm Is CDMA and works with the GSM network, but you cannot unlock a CDMA phone, you can just get it activated! the only problem with that is actually getting the phone activated. Mosy companies will terminate their employees for doing this. Also the phone will work with the 3G. It’ll say “3G” or “3GSM” on the GSM networks and “1XEV” on the CDMA networks. This is not really that complicated. You don’t even have to go through the complicated process of getting it “unlocked”. There is no such thing on CDMA phones, Only on GSM phones.

StormRaider May 4, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I got the unlock code from a website, then put it in the phone. The phone accepted the code but the calls are being routed to verizon. I think i missed a step. I didn’t turn of the wireless connection before the phone accepted the code. Would that be a problem and how to fix it?

Reply

naran May 5, 2009 at 12:25 am

Blackberry storm is not only a CDMA. Its a CDMA and GSM phone. You can also use gsm network providers sim card. It has the option to use for it. I have done this for my phone to use when i went for my vacations. I tried many sites to unlock the phone. But most of them failed. I finaly got it form http://www.unlock-zone.com and used it with the local network. If you need any unlocking instructions for storm i can able to forward the instructions to your email address. Just check and see you can able to follow the instructions and able to enter the code

Reply

First things first – I would wait a month or so before buying a storm – the new version is about to be released and it is much better than the first generation.

As far as setting it up , all you would need is a BlackBerry data plan from whatever carrier you are with. With that you will get all the functionality of the BlackBerry.

BlackBerry data plans are not the same as normal data plans.

Hey All,
I have a BB Storm and just got it unloacked by calling verizon. You DO NOT need to buy anything at all but simply need to know the right words to say.

Verizon would not just give out the code b/c u ask for it. Remember, they have a service where they charge users to use the phone if they are going abroad hence the reason they are not willing to just give away the code and lose out on the service they offer.

I acted very distraught b/c of a mistake they made on my bill and new that I wanted my phone unlocked. Since the CS rep. already new I was angry she had to tell me the truth when I asked. They simply gave me a number to call and get my phone unlocked. (Yes they still did send me an email to try to prevent me from going ahead, but it does not affect you plan in any way)

You cannot call the number direct though as they will pull up your file and see that a request was not put in before through their normal customer service reps. Follow the procedure to get that number and everything should go smooth from there.
Hope this helps.

Cooper December 7, 2009 at 2:10 pm

@Jules

Unless you have a BlackBerry data plan on your phone then quite a few apps will not work for you.

There is a difference between a standard data plan and a BlackBerry data plan.

Reply

Cooper December 7, 2009 at 2:15 pm

@Sandra

As long as you have a good data connection on your Storm (you probably already have service on it that includes a data package) you only have to follow a couple quick steps to get the browser icon to show up.

Go to the options icon, then to “advanced options” and then to “host routing table.” Now hit the menu button (the one with all the dots) and select “register now” from the pop-up menu. It will show “registration message sent” so click OK then go back to the home screen.

You have now sent a message to the RIM servers that your device is active, and in response they send the needed service books to your device. It is these service books that enable the use of the browser and the display of the browser icon, which should show up on the home screen within a minute or two.

If this doesn’t do the trick, I suggest you contact your wireless carrier to ensure your Storm has a working data connection and that your account is setup correctly for data usage.

That sounds like there is a disconnect between your device and your carrier – try resending service books and HRT
Read here: http://www.bbgeeks.com/quick-tips/what-is-a-service-book-what-is-a-host-routing-table-881448/

If that does not resolve your issue you will most likely have to speak with tech support to diagnose the issue.

@Eddie – that does sound a bit odd but try resending your Service Books and HRT info to see if that clears things up:

Eddie- I too have an unlocked storm that I use on Tmobile. I got my phone used and when I was on my phone screen it said a different number even though my sim said my number. So dial ##000000 and a screen will pop up and it says my number at the top and click on it and delete the # thats already there and put in yours, then your phone will restart automatically and everything should work on your phone and be programmed to tmobile. I had to do this to get my internet to work. good luck

I bought a BlackBerry Storm and I am on T-Mobile service. In the very begining my Interent worked but I was having toruble making and recieving calls. I then down graded the software and that solved the problem of making and receiving calls. Now I am having trouble with my Interent. It logs on but it will not search. It simply says at the bottom of the screen Requesting but nothing ever happens. Can anyone help me with this issue?

ldnoel you need to have firmware version 5. I had the same problem but going to version 5 solved it. no probs since I have email, web and phone no glitches. If you need the firmware go to blackberry downloads to get it or use the desktop manager and check for updates. You may have to unlock the phone again but its so easy it shouldnt be a problem.

G8KeaPoR January 21, 2010 at 8:05 pm

By the way for people wanting the unlock code just call 1-888-844-0395 that gives you verizons global tech support. They don’t even ask why you just call in and ask for the unlock code. They didn’t even ask why I wanted it or anything all they did was ask for my phone number and then wala i got my code. This does require having a verizon account so if you are leaving the darkages and going to a cheaper provider then you wont have a problem. Also I was able to keep my same number for those wondering and no att and tmobil do not care if you add an unlocked phone to your account with them. it isn’t against the rules and wont get the guy fired as someone previously suggested.

@Dorian – try removing the sim and doing a battery pull – put it back in – pull the battery again.

If the sim is still unrecognized then head over to the AT&T store and get a new one and test it out.

let me know what the results are.

Problem with my blackberry storm unlocked 9530 for tmobile, it works fine except for voicemail and MMS. there is no icon anywhere for MMS, how do i get it to work? Also whenever i call my voicemail it asks me to enter a 10 digit code(my number) so i do and it says you didnt type in the right number. I changed the number on the phone to mine and it rebooted it but the voicemail still doesnt work, the voicemail says i have 2 new messages, what do i do?

@wally This appears to be a problem caused by the network itself. I suggest using a hybrid OS which can be found here:

Use one for the 9530 and follow all instructions. ie install the os they suggest then the hybrid over top of it.

Reply

@Tic Toc All apps will continue to work as normal even after you have unlocked the BlackBerry. Unlocking just clears out some software locks that prevent the phone from working on a competing network.

You can check out http://www.carrierunlock.com for a nice unlocking service. Ten dollars and they will send you the code and instructions you need to unlock your Berry =)

@Khris You will have limited functionality to begin with. You should be able to use the phone, internet (with apn settings) , camera etc.

You will not have email or BBM functionality unless you sign up for a BlackBerry data plan (BIS) with your carrier.

Reply

Cooper May 14, 2010 at 11:12 am

@Mike CDMA does not use SIM cards – You would need to contact them to find out the logistics of getting your phone onto their network. In most cases that involves having them flash the device so it is now on their network.

I have a blackberry 9530 (Storm 1) unlocked and have the Tmobile $10 unlimited web plan. I have managed to get internet working on the phone by changing APN settings to internet2.voicestream.com….reading up about this on forums, I imagined I could use 3rd party apps, and I also installed a few apps using .axl .cod (or .jad files with blackberry downloader)….however, none of those applications work…
When I start any application, it opens “blackberry browser” with “requesting” status bar at the bottom and displays message ” Unable to connect to the internet, please try again later.
If the problem persists, please contact your service provider”.

This is in spite of the fact that I am able to surf the internet well using Opera…and also able to use WAP browser to access a few “selected” websites.

I understand that unless I have the BlackBerry Data plan ($25-30), I will not be able to use Black berry branded software and apps like the black berry browser/ push email etc…and I am fine with that.

But I was hoping to use 3rd party applications with my generic data plan as I had read.

Could you please help me out?

Thanks a lot

@Brey – I would update my APN and TCP information (read here: http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Carrier_specific_APN/TCP_settings)

Then download and install Opera Mini or the Bolt Browser and you should get internet access. Beware though – usage could result in VERY high bills from your carrier.

@MzStorm2 It looks like they are having issues with unlocked phones on their network. I wont go so far as to say that they are intentionally blocking them. I think it is more likely that they made a change in their network that has compromised their ability to transmit data services to unlocked phones on their network.

Once you get it and get like an AT&T or a T-Mobile sim card, it’ll work perfectly fine?

If you buy a unlocked phone your service provider will have to reset the APN numbers, this should fix the most of the problems.

Hey if I unlock my storm 2 to use t-mobile and want at some point to revert back to Verizon, will I have to theoretically go thru the unlock procedure again?

I have a Blackberry Storm 9530 Verizon with v5.0.0.1041 (Bundle 1688, Platform 4.2.0.456) Unlocked, and I could get TMobile to work. I currently selected 2G only, TMoblie as the network, GSM, and Data services off. I could not get EDGE, but I got edge. I don’t think EDGE exists…
