What is a service book? What is a host routing table?

by on November 26, 2008

When you’re looking for a solution to a BlackBerry, someone might tell you to resend your service books or reset your host routing table. Upon hearing this for the first time, many of you might drop your jaws and utter “What the heck is that?” The terms themselves aren’t of great importance. The actions though — resetting your host routing table, resending your service books — can get you through a number of BB issues, though.

We talked about host routing tables about a month ago, when I no longer had a BlackBerry Internet browser. The fix was simple. Go to Options, Advanced Options, Host Routine Table. Hit Menu and select Register Now. It’s that easy. That re-registered my device with the network, which sent all my goodies back to me. If you’re missing a core BB application, you might want to consider giving this a shot. There’s little to lose.

Service books you’ll find in your BIS login. We also covered this recently, when I had no message services configured. If you’re getting errors with your email and SMS, you might want to resend your service books. As with host routing tables, this will not solve all problems, but with messaging problems its at least worth a shot.

These two functions, combined with the good ol’ battery pull, should get you through a good deal of technical issues.

Sorry, but the HRT and Battery Pull tricks just don’t necessarily cut it. First of all, if you’re on a BES, you have two sets of service books – your BIS (general) service books, and your BES service books.

The only sure way to get ALL your BIS service books is to have them pushed from the back end – either by logging into your carrier’s BIS site, or by contacting your carrier’s Customer Support and having them push the service books down.

As for your BES service books, your BES Admin can push them down, or if you have Desktop Manager installed and configured with your host Email connected, your service books will automatically be pulled down when you connect. Note that if you do this, you should go to your Enterprise Activation screen and wait about 5 minutes to see if it starts. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, but if it does start up, you’re best off keeping the connection until it finishes.

Does anyone have the SMS service book for the Nextel 8350i? I’m using it on Boost and everything works great, internet, email, MMS, etc. Just looking to add the SMS option so I don’t have to send them with MMS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

@Cory try pulling the battery to see if they come back. Also did you recently install or uninstall the Facebook app?

it is always a good idea to backup your contacts and data on a regular basis in case this type of thing happens.

yes cooper i uninstall facebook

Cooper February 16, 2010 at 10:40 am

@Cory

Try this:

1. completely disassociate your BlackBerry from your facebook account – you will have to adjust settings in your facebook account to do this.

2. Do a battery pull on your device while it is still on and replace it after 30 seconds. Are your contacts back?

3. Log into your BIS account and resend your service books.

That should do the trick and bring your contacts back.

@lui Unfortunately that is a hard problem to diagnose. My first suggestion would be to resend your service books and HRT

@Cory service books wont do anything for your contacts, go to your address book and click menu. And go to filters. Make sure nothing is being filtered out. If that doesntwork then your contacts are gone. Make a back periodically in case things like this happens…

@Lui. Complicated issue. They won’t register and your carrier doesn’t know what to do? Trying talking to rim. You may need to do a hard reset (RTN is what i call it) and reset your device to factory settings and reprovision it. But i don’t know if that will mess it up since its unlocked.

@Cody What carrier are you using? You may have success by entering in APN/TCP settings for your carrier and then downloading OPera Mini or Bolt as your browser.

Hello, I’m sure you get this issue ALL the time but I am at my wit’s end and have yet to find an answer.

I got an unlocked BB Storm2 9550 off eBay. I worked with both AT&T and many forums to get it fully up and running. I can use almost the entirety of the device – browser, SMS, Bluetooth, etc – HOWEVER, I for the life of me cannot get MMS to work. I know this is a common problem.

AT&T tried sending down the service books, I’ve done the “Register Now” Host Routing Table option, and I even loaded the services books directly through the Desktop Manager. The service book transfer within the DM went through but when I unplugged the phone, the MMS Service Book is still not present.

Anyone have any further suggestions? I’ve pretty much tried everything these forums have had to offer. Has anyone actually been able to get MMS up and running correctly on an unlocked BB?

Many thanks,
Ashley

@ashley – Unfortunately I can not offer much insight as to why MMS can not be activated by AT&T. I have found this forum post that looked like it had the magic trick though.
Hopefully you have not tried this method before.

@Zarrul You may have to create a new BIS account – contact your carrier for assistance in doing this if you can not get your current BIS account to work with your new device.

@Cory

I had the same problem, and, alas, the contacts will be GONE. (I had removed Facebook when I found SocialBeat–about to get rid of SocialBeat as soon as I get my beloved Trillian installed!)

However, IF, by chance, you have a Google account linked with your phone (e.g. gmail, GoogleTalk, Google Maps) and it’s set to periodically synchronize your phone contacts with your Google contacts (by default, I believe, since I don’t recall setting it to do that), you can re-sync them from your Google account to your phone and restore them that way. That’s what saved my ass, and I didn’t even know it was there! I hardly use my Google account, except I LOVE the Google Maps! Whoda thunk! :-D Needless to say, I’ve since decided to keep the (otherwise useless) gmail stuff on my phone…

@brigitdryad0 Thank you for the input – I bet that saves a whole bunch of people some frustration down the line.

Hi Cooper & everybody else, i recently had my curve 8520 stolen and then replaced by my insurance, all was fine with my old phone in terms of blackberry data plan, i could use emails and bbm normally and i remember having all my service books, but my new phone which is exactly the same, for some reason aparently doesn’t have a data plan? even though i’m using the same number and contract with virgin, they sent me a new sim with the same number, i’ve registered with the HRT but nothing gets pulled back from virgin, i’ve rang them and they put a message through to their technical team but i was wondering that if it was just an easy fix, you could help? if you need any more info just ask, thanks loads

@Brewser I think you will need to speak with their support staff. from the sounds of it, the device was not provisioned properly on their end.

Hey I am having an issue with not being able to send text msgs or make phone calls. I tried doing what the above message says. Is there anything else I can do. I have a 8530 the error msg I received was SMS error 7 Message ID 152

Cooper August 17, 2010 at 9:59 am

@Kathy I suggest checking your Options > SMS settings. Ensure that the Service Center number is correct – confirm with your carrier.

Also confirm with them the preferred setting for the “Network to Send Over” option.

Reply

Cooper September 23, 2010 at 1:13 pm

@suziette Try doing a battery pull when the keypad starts glitching out like that. If that does not work then you might want to do a backup of your data through Desktop Manager then wipe your device and reload your OS.

At that point if you are still having problems with the keypad it is most likely a hardware issue and will have to be looked at by a tech.

Using a storm 2 9550, supposedly unlocked. activating the service it worked for a bit before dropping in & out and not working at all. tried to do a security wipe thinking prev phone company may have blocked it. contacted the prev company which released me from the service, but the current one says its still attached to a service. how do i know if i am still locked on verizon? although don’t think this can be the case as i already used this phone with another phone company not in the US & it worked for the most part. After the recent security wipe I have sent service books from the old bb on the same carrier but HRT is empty & have no entries to register to. Very confused. unsure if this is a simple issue or complex & i am just going about with it wrongly. please help!

@lxboy903 You need to contact your service provider and have them fix the problem. It sounds like your device is not set up properly to receive the mms format.

Cooper February 1, 2011 at 10:55 am

@omat Give it a wipe and a clean install with the latest OS available for your device. This does not have to be from your carrier.

Next – contact your service provider and ask them to ensure that the data plan associated with your device is in fact a BlackBerry BIS Data Plan.
