Tips for Tuesday: BlackBerry 7 phone call tips

by on March 20, 2012

“Who could that possibly be?” It’s a question I ask nearly every time my phone rings and my girlfriend is with me. Sure, there are some people who still make the old fashioned phone call — my parents, for instance — but most of the time someone who wants to reach me will email or text. A phone call might follow if necessary, but by that point it’s expected. Still, just because I don’t my BlackBerry to make phone calls frequently doesn’t mean that others use it the same way. To celebrate the continuing voice call warriors, here are a few phone call tips for your BlackBerry 7 smartphone. All of the tips here can be found by going to your phone (pressing Send does this quickly), clicking the BlackBerry button, and going to Options. Holster settings If you holster your BlackBerry, you can automatically pick up and end calls. In fact, your BlackBerry does this by default. Of course, some people might not like this. While I don’t use a holster, I can imagine being annoyed at having my BlackBerry automatically answer the call when I unholster the device, before I get a chance to check the caller ID. Go to In-call Settings and you’ll see these holster options right on top. I would always change Auto Answer Calls to Never. But you do also have the option of answering once you unholster the phone (Out Of Holster), or automatically answering after five seconds if you’re on Bluetooth. Phone list When you press the Send button to open up your phone app, you might notice that it doesn’t always go to the same screen. That’s because by default, your BlackBerry is set to go to the screen you were on previously. If you were on your contacts screen, for instance, it will go back there. If you were on your missed calls, it will go there instead. You can change that, though. Under Call Logs and Lists you’ll see an option for Initial View. Change it to Call Log if you always want to see your call log, or Contacts if you always want your address book to come up by default. If you choose the address book option, make sure to set your preference on Phone List View, which is the next option. You can have it go by most recent calls, or by most used. I prefer using most used. Speed Dial If you call a lot, chances are you’re going to use speed dial. We went over how to assign a speed dial key to your contacts a while back, and the process remains pretty much the same in BlackBerry 7. You’ll find this in the same Options menu for the phone app.
