Have you ever been on a business trip and found yourself without a wifi connection for your laptop? Yes, free wifi can be found in almost all hotel/motel rooms these days, but service outages and other factors can still come into play, leaving you with no connectivity and no way to get the days work from your laptop into the hands of your team back home.
Luckily for you BlackBerry owners, there is another great option available. Of course I am referring to the fact that you can use your BlackBerry as a modem during times of limited or non existent wifi access.
In this article, I will discuss the process of implementing your BlackBerry as a modem. I will make note of all the required files and equipment and link to as many resources as possible to ensure you have all the information necessary to take on this task yourself. while the concept of using the BlackBerry as a modem itself is straight forward, the process involved has quite a few nuances unique to various model/carrier combinations. Sit back, take a deep breath and lets get into it!
Required items and software
BlackBerry Smartphones The first thing you will need to have on hand is a BlackBerry smartphone. Various models of BlackBery are available; however, not all models include “tethered modem functionality”. The following list includes all BlackBerry models that will perform as a modem when tethered to a laptop.
- BlackBerry 7130c
- BlackBerry 7130e
- BlackBerry 7250
- BlackBerry Curve 8300
- BlackBerry Curve 8310
- BlackBerry Curve 8320
- BlackBerry 8703e
- BlackBerry 8705g
- BlackBerry 8707g
- BlackBerry 8800
- BlackBerry 8820
- BlackBerry 8830 World Edition
Cables and Software
In order to utilize your BlackBerry as a modem you will need to have a USB cable connected and have the BlackBerry Handheld Manager installed on your laptop. The BlackBerry Handheld Manager is a component of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. In order to initialize the BlackBerry Handheld Manager, simply activate the Desktop Manager software. The BlackBerry Handheld Manager will now be running in the background.
Drivers
Most versions of the BlackBerry Desktop will have shipped with the necessary modem drivers installed. In the event that you do not have a set of modem drivers installed with your current BlackBerry desktop, you will need to either install them manually or download the latest release of the BlackBerry Desktop Software. If you require more information about the installation of modem drivers for your BlackBerry, please check out the discussions at the BlackBerry Forums.
The Set Up
Verifying your Modem Configuration:
Once you have made sure that you have all of the essential items listed above, it is time to verify that your set up is complete. This includes verifying that your modem driver exists and is functioning correctly. This step requires going into the control panel settings of your BlackBerry and configuring specific properties related to your chosen provider.
For complete step-by-step instructions on how to verify your modem installation and functionality, check out the BlackBerry Forums related post.
Adding a New Internet Connection:
The next step in the process is to add a new internet connection within your laptop. This connection will be reserved for internet usage via the BlackBerry as modem only. Set up this new internet connection like any other, the process will vary depending on if you are using Windows XP or Vista.
If you are having issues, simply perform a Google search for the term “new internet connection” plus the OS you are using. Additionally you will have to enter some carrier specific details when assigning the required usernames and passwords.
A complete list of supported carriers and their username/password details can be found in this BlackBerry Forum discussion post.
Disabling the IP Header Compression:
It is important to disable IP header compression along with disabling hardware flow control, modem error control and modem compression. These can be disabled by following these simple steps:
- Start Menu->Network Connections->”BlackBerry Modem”
- Click Properties Button
- Click Networking Tab
- Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”
- Click Properties Button
- Click Advanced… Button
- Disable “Use IP header compression” checkbox
- Click all OK buttons to close all dialogs
Configuring your BES:
If you have your BlackBerry service set up through a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you will need to contact your Exchange hosting provider and ask that they enable the “BlackBerry IPModem” setting on the BES. This setting was introduced in Version 4.0 of BES. Fire up your Laptop and get to surfing:
Once you have your BlackBerry and laptop configured using the steps laid out here and in the information contained in the BlackBerry Forum post, you are ready to begin surfing. Simply connect the BlackBerry to your Laptop via USB, run the BlackBerry Desktop Software and click on the BlackBerry Modem icon in your list of available network connections. You will now be surfing the web at broadband speeds using nothing more than your BlackBerry for your internet connection.
A Word of Warning
While most wireless carriers offer you an “unlimited” data plan for the duration of your service contract, it is quite common for there to be small print that protects the carrier from excessive usage on your part. It is always a good idea to discuss any plans of this nature with your provider to ensure that you are within their terms of service. You do not want to check the mail next month and find an $85,000 data charge on your statement. These words to the wise also apply to anyone who is not currently using a plan that allows for unlimited data transfer. If you do not have unlimited data plan, do not even think of using your BlackBerry as a modem.
How about some Bluetooth Connections?
The previous method explained above required that you have your BlackBerry and your laptop connected through USB cable in order to facilitate the tethered relationship. Depending on what model of BlackBerry you are using, you may also have the option to tether your BlackBerry to your laptop via Bluetooth connectivity. Enabling Bluetooth connections on your BlackBerry and PC:
The Bluetooth functionality of your BlackBerry can be enabled in a few minutes.
Once it has been setup, you can then use your BlackBerry to wirelessly transfer files, synchronize your PC and function as a modem. For a step by step guide to the process of enabling Bluetooth on your BlackBerry, head over to the somelife blog where it is discussed in detail.
The Setup:
The first step you will need to take is setting up your ISP or cellphone provider specific information and a new internet connection. This is very similar to the process as described above. There are a few variances however, so I would suggest heading on over to Somelife and reading another one of their posts containing specific detailed instructions.
For BlackBerry Users who do not have a device that supports tethering
OK so we have discussed how to connect your BlackBerry to your PC so that it can act as a modem during times of limited connectivity. We have even shed some light on the two methods available to do so. The question remains however, for all BlackBerry owners who do not have the latest and greatest models, is there any way that they can play the modem game too? The answer is yes. Despite older models of the BlackBerry not having the advanced modem functionality, there is a third party solution which is available to all.
Introducing the MobiShark Modem:
The MobiShark BlackBerry Modem supports connections via USB and Bluetooth. It is an straight forward solution for anyone who is trying to squeeze modem functionality out of an outdated handheld model. Conveniently, it also helps to connect users who have service with carriers who do not support tethering. Built to help you avoid data charges (extra tethering charges levied by most cellphone companies), the MobiShark modem pays for itself($49.97) in a short amount of time. The MobiShark software is available as a free trial download. The process of setting up the MobiShark modem is quick and painless.
Simply download and install the software onto your PC. Once this is complete, use the BlackBerry Application loader to place the required files onto your BlackBerry. Once you have both elements installed, you will be surfing without a hitch. Stay tuned to BBGeeks in the coming weeks for a full featured review of the MobiShark software.
Finally, what if I have a Mac?
Last but not least, we have the Mac crowd. If you are the proud owner of both a BlackBerry and a Mac machine, give yourself a pat on the back and do not feel left out. There is also a process which can be completed to hook your BlackBerry up to the Mac to act as a modem. The process is quite similar to the PC method described above, but with a few specific differences due to the Mac OS. Take a look at the instructions which were put together by Dave Taylor at www.askdavetaylor.com.
That’s it folks, hopefully I have pointed you to a bunch of valuable resources that will provide you will all the details you need to get your BlackBerry operational as a modem whether it be through USB tether or via Bluetooth connectivity.
Good luck and if you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments and I will do my best to answer them for you.

Do you know if the Blackberry 8700g or the 8700c is able to be used for internet modem use
yesthe Blackberry 8700 and 8700c can be used as a modem
When I teether via my blackbery (i’ve got sprint service) I am not able to use my phone.. is this normal. I was under the impresssion that I could teether and make calls.
@Ivette- Typically it will be either voice or data service from my experience. However I have noticed that if I receive an incoming call and I don’t talk too long, my data connection won’t drop. Of course this could be provide specific. I don’t have Sprint so I can’t vouch for that.
Thanks. I just bought a blackberry curve after reading its fantastic reviews. I will set it up as a modem for emergency
Would anyone know if this is legal? Many carriers charge extra for sending data outside Blackberry (ie computer). Wouldn’t this be breaking the contract with them? I love the whole concept, but skeptical if it’s done illegally.
yes its legal, its a good sales feature for network; AT&T EDGE is fastest right now and Blackberry Bold on 3G will fly like a broadband modem …if you can keep the battery from melting
When I use my Blackberry Pearl as a modem for my desktop computer I can’t get into anything on yahoo which is where my email is. Is this because I already have it on my phone or is their something I might be doing wrong?
When I use my Blackberry Pearl as a modem for my desktop computer, I can’t manuever around facebook. It lets me login, and then, that’s it! I can’t access any links on the homepage. Very frustrating! Any suggestions?
The only problem I can see is that you’re going to have a 5 GB cap. I know I go far above 5 GB on my laptop monthly.
I am thinking of getting a blackberry to use as my modem for my desktop computer, instead of the internet service we have.
Any comments, thoughts, recommendations?
I am currently using the Sprint Blacberry Curve 8330. It works flawlessly as a tethered modem. The Curve uses the EVDO high speed through Sprint which has some nice bursts of over 1mb at times. I use it to download and to up load with beautiful speeds. I have had no problem making and recieving calls while tethered as well as emails. The one catch is your sms messages will not come through till after you disconnect. Other than that the tethered modem has saved me on numerous occasions.
How do I set up outlook express so it will send email when tethered to my blackberry curve. (I get my email ok, but cant send it) I’m not the most tech savvy :)
Hello, I’m having issues with my connection. I have everything set up exactly as the steps say and it connects. But it only connects “locally” it won’t connect to the internet at all. If there is anyone who can help email me at emofox@sbcglobal.net. Also I have a blackberry curve 8310.
OK, now I have a question… I can get online with my laptop via the connection from my Blackberry and even download my emails with Outlook express but, what is the outgoing “smtp and password” so we can SEND emails?!?!
P.S. I’m on cingular in the U.S.
Hi Stefy, I can help you. I just sent you an email.
Hi, I see that you are all users in the US. Can this be done in Mauritius? I got my blackberry with unlimted data, but wanna maximise its usage, using the BB as a modem. The service provider is Emtel Limited. Don’t know which username and password to use.
Yes you can do this with Emtel service – you should contact your customer service rep to ask detailed questions but it is listed on this page as one of the services offered:
http://tinyurl.com/b7up65
fishboy: go get yourself a free Gmail account. Even if you never tell anyone your email address, and thus get nothing but spam as incoming mail, you can still use its SMTP server for sending. Just make sure you set the “reply to” address as your regular email, so when people hit “reply” it doesn’t go back to this dummy Gmail account.
WILL THE BLACKBERRY BOLD WORK USING THESE INSTRUCTIONS?
THANKS
I have a blackberry bold how can I use it as a modem on my laptop. Will the Shark Modem work on bb 9000 v.4.6.Thanks

I installed my BB as a modem adhering to the instruction to the tee and I still cant connect to the internet by dialing up. I have a BB curve 8320, T-mobile carrier. Its frustrating, I’ve been up and down the instructions and checked everything, and I still fail to connect to the modem
Problem: I have BB curve 8320, T-mobile carrier. I have followed the instructions to the tee and I am still unable to connect to the modem. I went and checked my setup several times and I cant find where the problem is. My Desktop manager is up and running, I have a signal and everything, I unchecked boxes, but nothing..please help.
I have the 8350i with boostmobile. I have unlimited internet (free) and i use ramble im (free aim) I would like to use it as a modem but the speeds with mobishark is too slow. You think tetherberry is any better or is it just cuz boostmobile is slow period?
Can any one vouch that Mobishark will allow you to surf with out incurring charges from the carrier. I am looking at purchasing this software because I liked the demo, but am afraid that it will incur charges from the carrier. I currently have a BB curve 8330 through Alltel. If any one has any more info or advice you can contact me at Robertlamont80@gmail.com Thanks

yup – should work fine with the Bold
will the blackberry tour work with these instructions
Hey guy I’m just got my blackberry conected to my lapto but what is happening is that I come across with a verizon page every time I try it they want me to buy the monthly fees why is that happening and how I could avoid it?I went to see a friend who works for verizon I told him what I was trying to do and did’nt tell a shit any advise?

try that website, it;s simple. Downlaod application to your cell phone & PC. check it out
I just upgraded to a blackberry tour and can’t get windows to recognise my device. After reading the blog I am now wondering, does the new Tour tether????? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok I’m not quite understanding how to use my bb as a wi fi hot spot can someone explain this a little better I think it was in to little of words. Lol
@penteco Verizon locks out this functionality because they want you to pay for a premium service they offer that does the same thing =(
@Joanna You first need to make your phone discoverable – options > memory > mass storage mode support > on
@fisheyes Not sure what you are asking here – this post is not about setting up a hotspot – it is about using your BlackBerry as a modem for your PC.
Is there any way to use the blackberry curve 8330 work as a wifi hotspot to connect to an ipod?
not that I am aware of no
This was the poorest piece of information ever published to a site. If I ever get my lap top back to where it was, I will never follow no one elses advice on how to connect anything to my lap top.
I have done a few speed tests (www. mobilespeedtest dot com, speedtest dot net etc) and noticed that when I browse direct with the BB (not via tethering) the sppes are like 10x faster than when I am using the BB as a modem (tethering).
Is that normal … if so how can I grab those extra kbps whilst using tethering?
Sppeds have been incostistent but something like 240kbps with BB direct, 34kbps whilst tethering for example.
I have searched all over Google and had no luck with any answers.
I am going to get an 8330 from sprint. Sprint says the “unlimited internet” means unlimited internet, and there will be no additional charges. Can anyone confirm this?
Ok,I have the curve 8330.can I tether 2 the internet on my laptop?my provider is us cellular and I’ve tried 4 weeks now 2 no avail.its so frustrating and all I wanna do is light surfing.if u can walk me through this please email me @ JonAsh@uscellular.blackberry.com
Can I do this with my PC at home or just my laptop? When I downloaded the desktop manager onto my laptop the last catagory was IP modem but when I downloaded manager on my home computer that option is not there. Anyone know why?
Found this on one of the forums – should work for you:
If the icon is gone, close BB Desktop Manager, and go to c:/Documents and Settingsall usersapplication dataresearch in motionblackberry to find a file, “ip_modem_configuration.xml”.
Edit it, find your carrier, and set the “enabled” from “false” to “true.”
Then launch Desktop Manager again and it should be there.
Remember, application data is a hidden folder, so make sure you can see hidden folders.
BTW – this will probably not work on Windows 7 as the config file is locked.
after all the reading I have done I finally got my BB Tour hooked up via USB only to come across a Verizon page wanting more effing money from me! How can I sidestep this?
@Pangeist
Unfortunately with Verizon as your carrier you will not be able to side step this.
hello, i have got the blackberry storm 9500 and i had it off someone that was on contract and im on pay as you go and i dont know how to get on to the internet because it is registerd with a contract sim. do you know how i can change this or registar is with my pay as you go sim? thanks.
Unfortunately you will not be able to use BBM or the internet services etc unless you have a BlackBerry data plan on your device.
i want to use 8310 as a modem for 3g internet connection, is it possible to get the desktop software by email? my connection is 2 slow to download it
could anyone pleaseeeeeeeeeee email me the desktop software for blackberry 8310
if anyone can, please email it to me xzyte5@hotmail.com
If I am about to purchase blackberry service. Which provider will this work best with? I have a macbook pro. I am thinking AT&T or Sprint but leaning towards AT&T because they claim to be fastest. What do you guys say?
Also, is any particular blackberry better than others. Do you know if this can be done with an iphone?
@rawdawg This shoul;d work with all models of BlackBerry but you will probably have better functionality using a newer model. Yes you can tether using an iPhone as well.
Does anybody know if sprint is still allowing its customers to do this for free or have they started charging to tether as well?
I have a BB Curve 8320 on T-mobile unlimited data plan. A couple weeks ago I started tethering it to my laptop no problems, then one day it would only do a Local Area connection, so I re-did the whole thing and now it doesn’t connect at all please help you can email me at carpenter.erin@gmail.com
Can anyone tell me if I will be able to teather my blackberry, I have curve 8330 boost mobile prepaid unlimited. I have desktop manager and tried to connect but I receive an error.
Hello,
Can you tether BB Bold with ATT without the tether plan? I’m using the software from tether.com, it works on and off, can upload fast but can’t pull data.
@wade I do not suggest tethering on ATT without their plan. As soon as they identify your actions you will be charged for usage at a rate that will blow your mind!
Just not worth it – You can tether without the plan, but if you use a high volume of traffic you may get caught and either terminated or have the tethering plan added to your plan.
I have beenusing my BB as a modem for quite a while. Since we have moved, I have been doing it alot while I wait for regular service to be installed. It works well for a while, and I have 2 bars. Then after a while, I lose my signal. This happens over and over. How the signal vary so much in one spot and does it have to do with the amount of time I am using this?
ive always used my tmobile blackberry curve 8320 as a tethered modem on my laptop. Ive curently bought a new HP laptop from best buy but now im having issues, everytime i get connected to the internet it works for prob about 5mins then I get a pop up that says “internet explorer 8 cannot website” “diagnose problems”. I dont know why this happens, computer says i still have a connection and ive been everywhere on the net with my dash to try and solve this. please help!
i just got my BB curve a couple days ago. i have an unlimited data plan but not sure if sprint will charge me for tethering. can anyone help me?
@Dick yes if they catch you you will be charged a hefty price per MB.
I have tried all the steps and it comes up on my phone that its tring to connect but will not please e-mail me if you have the fix leewrichter@yahoo.com
Hey Coop, I have a BB Tour….I have the unlimited data plan through Verizon. I am in Afghanistan and would like to set up my phone to my laptop. I have read every post on here but what is the best thing for me to do to get this laptop up and running. I need to chat with my kids! What EXACTLY do I need to do and where do I get the resources to do it?
Thanks,
Doug
@Doug G – I will tell you now that you will have difficulty. Verizon does not like tethering unless it is on their special plan.
the easiest way to tether is by using this app:
http://store.bbgeeks.com/product.asp?id=27826&n=Tether-for-BlackBerry
That being said, you will probably be hit with massive roaming data fees and if VZW gets really upset – a possible disconnect.
Hi Cooper
I use my BB as modem on my PC in South Africa. I have a prepaid service with my SP. Will I be charged any more than the regular R2/Mb?
Regards
@les it is possible – I would check with your carrier to be sure though
Hi Cooper
BTW I have BIS and not BES. Could I possibly get free internet service via BB as modem?
Regards
@les – it is not free – it will be billed to yoru BlackBerry data account.
In most cases you can use the BlackBerry to tether but if you use it a lot it can raise red flags and your carrier will charge you big time.
It is best to check your carriers terms of service to see what is allowed and what is forbidden.
I have a boost Mobile blackberry and I am on the sprint network with it. Is it possible to connect my laptop to the internet and if so how I’ve been tryin but I am lost! Thanks!
Cooper what is the best/easiest program to use to tether my dads sprint blackberry with 4.5.?? Os to my netbook? Also how likely is it to get caught by sprint? I would only be using it for when I got to my grandpas house. It would only be used a little bit.
Thanks
@Tyler the best app would be tether but I do stress that tethering without Sprints permission can result in huge fees. Not always but there is always the possibility.
You can get tether here:
http://store.bbgeeks.com/product.asp?deviceid=886&id=27826&n=Tether-for-BlackBerry
His blackberry is a curve 8330
Do you of many people that have gotten caught? And how much were they using it?
I have the first Blackberry Pearl 8100 and a Macbook Pro. I have figured out how to tether it to my Mac (both with OS X 10.4 and after upgrading to 10.5) as a modem via bluetooth back in the states with ATT/Cingular. Thanks to the info found here: fibble.org/
I’m now living in Bali, Indonesia and I’ve managed to get it working with the local provider Indosat. I’m still using the same script provided by fibble.org with the settings Research In Motion and Blackberry 8100 when I configure my bluetooth device on the Mac. However Indosat doesn’t want me to tether…here’s the details…
In order to have unlimited data on my phone I had to send a text message, “bis2″ (which stands for Blackberry Internet Service 2) to 882 in order to have unlimited data for the month. This is after paying 200,000IDR (about $22USD) to sign up for this unlimited service of which 40,000IDR was taken immediately. Every month, before this “unlimited” service expires, Indosat is supposed to send me a message alerting me to recharge before it expires. This involves paying 160,000IDR (~17USD) before the expire date.
I used the info I found here as a starting point to get the correct provider WAP info:
taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html
I had to hack at it a bit to get my computer to connect to Indosat’s PPP and found that the following settings worked, however the data wasn’t free. This is after the people who took the money told me I can’t tether it at all.
Network
Telephone Number: indosatgprs
Account Name: indosatgprs
Password: guest
Bluetooth Mobile Phone Setup
Phone Vendor: Research in Motion (script from fibble.org ..thanks!!)
Phone Model: BlackBerry 8100
Username:
Password:
When setting up the bluetooth
APN:
CID: 1
After my money ran out from using the data on the phone I was disconnected. I tried to reconnect and it goes through the usual steps: Connecting…, Authenticating… and it connects briefly before I get the error message:
Internet Connect
The connection was terminated by the remote site. Please try again.
I realize this is likely because I don’t have any more credit on my phone. I am able to continue surfing the internet on my phone as part of the unlimited plan but I am no longer able to tether it.
I have looked at the script from fibble.org and tried several hacks but can’t seem to get around this.
There must be a way for my computer to use the data stream from my phone without Indosat knowing…researching this topic…will post a solution if I find an answer…

I have a bb 8330 thru boost mobile. My phone has a modem option. I called boost they say even though the phone has the ability to be used as a modem they dont support the function. So the question is how can I do it . any help greatly appreciated my e mail is

Hello everyone and cooper,
I’ve noticed that you are very knowledgeable with the theathering service abilities for blackberries. I also noticed that you able to answer almost everyone question dealing with this issue except for people who are using the bb curve 8330 on boost mobile network(sprint). Is this because you are knowledgeable on the subject? In no way shape or form am I trying single you out or come at you. I am just trying to find out information on this service like many others. As you can assume by now, I have a boost mobile branded 8330. Is there anyway that you or the community might have some insight on this problem. Thank you very much
@trey It is not that I don’t know about tethering on Boost – it is more that it is against TOS
“Example of Prohibited Uses, of our data services include but not limited to use thereof (1) with server devices or host computer applications, or other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions, including, but not limited to, disproportionate Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections, peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing applications broadcast to multiple servers or recipients such that they could enable “bots” or similar routines; (2) as a substitute or backup for private lines or frame relay connections; (3) to send or receive unusually high numbers of messages (4) to engage in atypical web usage behaviors; (5) for tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware; and (6) for any other reason that, in our sole discretion harms our network.”
hello everyone i have a sprint blackberry tour…im tryingto to use tethering on my new toshiba satellie p500 and it wont work my computer wont detect my blackbery as a modem. im running win 7 64 bit
@D@rwin Are you using any kind of apps to tether? You might have better luck using something like:
http://store.bbgeeks.com/product.asp?deleteDevice=1&id=27826&n=Tether-for-BlackBerry
uhmmm i see so in oder for me to tether i need the tether app…i thought i could just tether with blackberry desktop mng…oooo well thanx any ways
Doing research for my husband’s BB. Verizon told me today that his phone can act as a 3G Mobile Hotspot, but I can’t figure out how to set it up. Came across this article and thought I’d throw it out there that Verizon told me it would be *free*. This may have changed?
@amber There seems to be some confusion. Using your BB as a modem is not the same as setting up a mobile hotspot. The Hotspot service is called MiFi and yes it does incur charges. Using your BlackBerry as a modem simply means using your BlackBerry data plan to access the internet while on your computer (tethering).
While you can technically tether the BlackBerry to your computer without using Verizons extras package it is not advised. They will likely find out and charge you a very high rate for data used.
One simple rule to go by is that with Verizon NOTHING is free. There is always a catch so look for it.
good luck
im reading all these questions and stuff so if someone asked what im about to sorry..and my question is… will this affect the internet charges on the phone bill ? my plan doesnt have internet access so please someone answer before my bill goes up higher than it already is. thanks
@shqiptare If you do not have an internet data plan on your BlackBerry I suggest avoiding tethering at all costs.
Essentially what tethering is is using your BlackBerry data plan to access internet through your computer. Instead of having a modem and internet service running into your house or a mobile broadband solution for your laptop you can plug in your BlackBerry and use it to access a wireless internet connection.
Without a data plan on your account you will be charged a very high rate for any data used while tethering. Also, the usage will rack up very quickly as pages viewed are full size and not scaled down for mobile.
oh by the way i have t-mobile if it matters. and if someone could actually explain what tethering is thanks again ..sorry very new to this stuff
Ok, heres a tricky one. I have and iPod touch and a BB 8350i (nextel, iden) I have seen people with the iPhone set it up for a adhoc network. Is it possible to do the same with my BB so my iPod can get online??
Thanks.
@Bill No unfortunately your BlackBerry can not be used as an access point directly. There may be a way to chain the BlackBerry, your PC and the iPod together using Bluetooth or a router but I am not aware of a specific technique.
can the new bb curve 8530 work with windows 7? And the modem setup is different on 7
hey i have a new backberry an i was just wondering wat sort of plan i wuld need to use my phone as a modem do i just need a regular internet plan or wat thanks get back to me as soon as possible
@Kenneth Depending on your carrier the answer is different. If your carrier allows tethering then you can use your BlackBerry data plan via your computer with no worries. Actually – only one worry – you would be wise to keep tethered data usage to below 5 gigs in any single billing period.
If your carrier does not allow tethering you will be charged very high fees for any data used.
The third option is to check and see if your carrier offers a specific tethering package (most do) – this will have a cost that is added on top of your monthly service bill.
Holy crap wow thanks a lot
ok i want to add apps, wallpapers, themes, etc to my blackberry 8900. @shqiptare Read this for tips on different ways to download third party apps to your BlackBerry

Using AppWorld over WiFi requires a BlackBerry data plan.
Hello cooper i want to know and ask you. That my bb curve 8520 also i did download CD’s bb but not work internet to PC so if you can help me how use motem internet to PC i hope you can do
@Jorge Are you receiving a specific error when you try and connect the BlackBerry as a modem? Where are you running into problems?
I tried this with Verizon Wireless in the USA and my 8800; and it worked; BUT… when I started up Internet Explorer it jumped to Verizon’s site telling me I needed to pay $25 a month to use the phone as a modem. (I felt like I was in a Holiday Inn trying to get online without having my room bill skyrocket).
So they have apparently closed that door (They wanted me to think it was SUCH A DEAL, $5 off; it’s normally $30 a month on top of their other hefty plan charges to use the same data access I already pay for…)
The program “Tether” seems to get around that, but it’s $49.95. (I installed the 7 day trial and it works fine, no VZW nag screens).
People who have posted on the Tether.com website seem to be convinced that Verizon will not charge you for casual usage with Tether, but warn that you shouldn’t go hog wild with bandwidth. My “unlimited data” plan may really be unlimited, or it may have a stealth 5 GB cap, I can’t tell. I only plan to use the BB as a backup way to get online when I’m traveling etc. People seem to think that you won’t get punished as long as you avoid things like hooking your Xbox up for massive gaming. HOWEVER… BE ADVISED…
* Verizon’s TOS clearly prohibit using the phone as a tethered modem unless you sign up for National Broadband Access (the $25 “such-a-deal”)
* Tether’s TOS specifically hold them unaccountable if your phone carrier should decide to hit you with an RIAA-style lawsuit to make an example of you.
I’m not paranoid, I’m just sayin’ this is the effen’ PHONE COMPANY we’re dealing with here… Und zay haff vays…
Ok I’ve seen conflicting reports on this.some comments say it works, other say you have to have a third party program. I have the unlimited everything plan with sprint (not boost). I’m following all the steps but I can’t get it to work with my 8330 curve. Are sprint people just outta luck, or am I missing something or is it just my phone?
will the blackberry curve 8900 work with these settings?
@Ofikay It should. We are working on an update to the guide shortly to account for new Operating Systems etc. Stay tuned.
@Cooper
Hello boss!
Sorry i have an older model BB 7100v, i already set the phone to a prepaid data plan.
I now need to tether it to my laptops, im living in Ivory coast(West africa), and my carrier is MOOV. Please need apn, user and password to connect Internet…
@John Miezan I think these are the settings. If they are incorrect just call your carrier and ask them to confirm their APN/TCP settings for you.

Blackberry 8330 curve titanium – need to have tethering feature; can I add this feature to this cell phone and will it operate as fast as a cell phone that comes with tethering feature.
Will it work with Sprint service.
Thank You. ERB
i aqlready have an unlimited internet plan so does blackberry manager for my pc add any additional fees to my monthly bill?
@Eric Nope – the Desktop Manager software is free and allows you to connect to your BlackBerry and back up data , install new versions of the OS etc.
@ Cooper thanks
@cooper can the blackberry 8530 be used as a modem on windows 7? If so, how do I get to the modem settings to configure them?
@Courtt2 Yes you should be able to get your 8530 up and running as a modem on Windows 7. Check out these forum discussions for tips. I plan on updating my post with new techniques shortly.

I am considering getting a BB 8350I and running it on Boost. Will I be able to use the phone as a modem? If so does it matter if I am on the $50 or $60 plan? Thanks
@Seth you could possibly connect your Boost BlackBerry to a pc and tether but it is strictly prohibited in their Terms of Service.
Hi Cooper,
Thanks for the info. It works! My question is whether AT&T will charge me if they find out? I had Blackberry with unlimited data plan.
@jim – Yes you will be charged if they find out – usually with excessive usage
Anybody know what the user name/password is to tether with US Cellular. I have a Blackberry Curve 8330 and looking to try this out.
Thanks.
Hey Cooper, or anybody else really. I’m using Windows 7, trying to tether my BB Curve 8330. Setting up the connection on Win7 was a little different than the steps outlined, but the information you provided was extremely helpful, and with my powers of intuition, I’m confident I created the connection properly with the right data in the right fields, and I made sure to disable ip header compression. When I tried to connect, I even noticed on my BB handheld screen it mentioned something along the lines of modem capability enabled or some such, basically telling me my laptop was trying to use my BB as a modem. However, my problem is that it just keeps giving me an Error 678. I’m sure that’s a fairly common and/or ambiguous message, I think I remember seeing it a lot in the past. Anyway, I would be grateful for whatever help you can provide. Thanks.
@aiel_king the 678 error basically states that access to the computer has been blocked.
This is most likely caused by your carrier blocking some of the processes involved with tethering on a software level. Most companies have a Tethering Addon that you can pay a monthly fee for and they attempt to block other “unauthorized” access.
If you can not get this working ata ll I suggest checking out an app called “Tether”. It is a tad pricey but it works well for many people looking to get around these kinds of restrictions.
You can grab Tether from the BBGeeks Store here: http://store.bbgeeks.com/product.asp?id=27826&n=Tether-for-BlackBerry

Hi,
I just want to know how to tether. I have a bb corve 8330. Thru sprint can someone tell me how to do this on my laptop??
I bought the curve 8530 from sprint because I heared. It could be used as a modem, but I have no computer anymore, but I have a PS3, so far I haven’t been able to find any info on how to get my PS3 and BB to tether. I’m sure online game is out of the ? But system updates and the sorts I would like. Any help?
Hi bos,
I’m using BB Bold 9000. I tried to use my BB as a modem. I use BIS on my BB
With unlimited data plan. First I’ve read on the net that says that we don’t have to pay
Extra charge for using internet on laptop by tethering with BB. first I use tetherbridge.com but its not worked.
Than I search all over the net. Now I’m using desktop manager 5.0.1. Use IP Modem function and it work. But I checked
My credit on my phone it charged me 5.000 IDR for about 1 M data. Is it because I did it wrong or? I already paid 180.000 idr per month for BIS unlimited data plan package.
Can show me how to tether using my unlimited data plan so I don’t have tu pay extra charge?
Anyway my carrier is kartu halo / telkomsel indonesia. Apn internet username (blank) pass (blank)
And what is boost means?
Thanks bos
Regards
M
@Andrew Ok so tethering is often restricted by your carrier and most will charge an extra fee if you are caught doing it. I would research whether or not your carrier has a tethering package available. You may wish to try out an app called Tether http://store.bbgeeks.com/product.asp?id=27826&n=Tether-for-BlackBerry
It has proven to be the most reliable method of avoiding tethering costs – that said however, the carrier will still charge you if they catch on.
Boost is a prepaid phone provider operating in the USA.
Dear MR. Cooper,
Thank you so much bos. If not too much to ask, would you please check in indonesia which carrier that have tethering package. In indonesia we have (elkomsel, XL, AXIS, Indosat, 3.
Thanks again bos
Regards,
M
Hi,
When I use my blackberry as a tethered modem I am unable to send or receive incoming or outgoing Blackberry Instant Messages – BBM. Can you please tell me how to fix this?
@Dave Who is your carrier? With certain carriers this may not be possible.
Hi,
My carrier is “3″ in Australia http://www.three.com.au
@Dave Unfortunately I can not find any information about whether 3 will allow tethering and BBm usage at the same time. I suspect there is a limitation but your best bet is to give 3 a quick ring and ask one of their techs to walk you through it.
Good luck and let me know what you find out.
Does the new Torch have this capability.
@Nadine yes it is capable of tethering. The majority of issues faced with tethering are on the carrier end as opposed to device limitations.
PLEASE HELP ME! I installed the BB APPL World, got a BB ID,logged in ACCEPTED the Addendum…then it takes me to my ACCOUNT INFO,where I can only make changed and save it..nothing else!!! I reinstalled the appl, reset the device, changed my password, got a different BB ID..nothing helps. Please is there anyone who knows what to do?
@Loon I was looking around for a solution to your problem and found this:
1. Delete App World and Reboot
2. Delete Blackberry Account
3. Re-install App World
4. Create a new Blackberry account
5. In App World, link to your payment preference – Paypal or Credit Card (I don’t think billing to phone company is available on Canadian networks), and then shut down App World.
6. From a computer:
a) login to your Blackberry Account
b) change the e-mail address associated with the account
c) logout
7. Open App World and login using the new e-mail address you associated with the BBerry account
Give it a shot and let me know if that solves the issue for you.
MY BLACKBERRY BOLD9000 DISCONNECT THE INCOMING CALLS AFTER 3 BILLS.
I have tethering wi att, works fine. i have a friend who uses his connection as a way that he and his wife can surf the web seperately on two seperate laptops, how to set this up is my question. my laptop is surfing, how to network? please? respectfully
@john I am not sure exactly how they have their devices setup to allow networking. You would have to ask them for detailed information.
I have a Blackberry 9630. Will it work for teathering? I did not see it on the list. I was told it would work by someone but have not started to set up yet.
Thanks,
@kirk Try the steps listed in this discussion: http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Tour-9630/Tethering-the-9630/td-p/307304

I hav mobishark trial version. after i installed it as a modem and went on the internet a while on my laptop using switch agent user on firefox and using a blackberry user, the connections stopped and gave an error: stream closed. is this my mobile carrier that stopped it or is this an error that occurs if u r still using the trial version of mobishark??
@Jacques I am not sure – You would probably have a better chance trouble shooting this with the mobishark team.
Hello Copper or anyone else,
I have a few questions and it seems to be that you Cooper knows the most about Blackberrys and tethering! Anyways, I own a purple BlackBerry Curve 8530 on Verizon Wireless and I have the unlimited package. I need to know how to set it up to my Apple macbook (white on from 2007) and also I need to know if I am going to find any HUGE extra charges at the end of the month for using my blackberry as a modem. I thinks thats all of the questions
I have. Thank you, Spencer
@spencer Check out this post for tips on hooking up to your mac as a modem.
http://www.bbgeeks.com/mac-and-blackberry/pair-your-bluetooth-and-mac-to-use-blackberry-as-a-modem-88792/
My advice is to be careful with tethering for the first little while until you know how your carrier is going to charge you for overages. Some carriers are ok with you tethering but some will charge very high fees if you are caught going against their terms of service.
can i install any voip dialer in my bb8900 curve
@anwer None that I know of that will actually work.
Hi. I’m having a BlackBerry meltdown. I hope you can help. I just moved countried (to France) and my BB was initially working on the wifi in my apt then all of a sudden stopped a week ago. Thing is it connects to the wifi still, cuz I can see that it does, but the data functionalities (email, im, etc) just don’t work on it anymore. I have tried to reset/hard set, etc, but nothing gives. What do you think is the problem?
PLEASE HELP!
@Toyin BlackBerry / wifi issues are very hard to diagnose. My suggestion would be to delete any profiles for your router from your BB and vice versa. Once they have been cleared go ahead and set them up again from scratch.
It is preferred that your router be broadcasting N as the BlackBerry has issues with some of the other signal types.
If you continue to have issues, I suggest registering and posting in one of the BlackBerry forums. There you can provide specific details of your setup and have a number of people comment and offer their potential solutions.
Good luck.
Why does my internet connection disconnect when I get on the phone and start talking. Once I updated my phone that has been happening. I remember when I haven’t update my phone and I can use it as a modem and talk on it. Please help.

I would like to link my Tab 10.1 to the BlackBerry to use the BlackBerry as a modem. I do not believe that BlackBerry have a version of the Desktop Manager for the Android software.

Am able to tether my Blackberry Torch as a modem for my Toshiba laptop? If so, could you send me instructions?
Thank you.
I’m trying to connect my 8820 to my new laptop operating with Windows7 64-bit. The computer does not detect my 8820. What is the problem, and how can I get them both to work together?
I am asking something slightly different. I need to move my pictures which by encryption are in rem format, from my blackberry bold. An idea from someone was to send them via email from my phone, but even after removing the encryption option, these cannot allow a send action to be done. Furthermore, I note that it is only for these type of files there is no send option, but for the unencrypted ones, the send option is available. Please can anyone bail me out, i need these pictures so badly…without them, I think yah it is gonna be something else! Trouble is with me meanwhile.
I have the BlackBerry 8530 and I’d like to know what do I choose in Mobile Internet Settings as a Profile? They don’t have the option for Boost and how do I get the Access Point, Username and Password information?
installing the new Blackberry OS6 Desktop Manager can let you connect to the internet easily. Just click “Connect to the internet!” after you’ve connected your BB to your PC then the OS6 Suite is properly installed in your PC. :)
