Silent dialing on your BlackBerry

by on January 13, 2009

When was the last time you actually had your keypad tones turned on? Surely it had to be when you had a consumer cell phone. Even then, I couldn’t stand the beeping when composing a text message, and I’m sure those around me didn’t like it either. I’ve been composing in silence for many years now, and I hope you are, too. Yet there’s an inherent trouble with BlackBerry devices: you can’t turn off the keypad sound when you’re making a phone call. So annoying. There’s a way around it, though. First off, go to Options, Screen/Keyboard, and turn your Key Tone off. This won’t work for most people, but I’ve read a few message board posts from people who claim it does. If not, here’s the workaround. This isn’t much of a secret, just a quick way to get it done. You’ll have to write yourself a note with the phone number. Once you save the note, you can just click the number and it will give you the option to dial. Pretty easy, eh? It’s not ideal, of course, but it will allow you to dial a number without your keypad making noise.

Easier than that, I just hold the green Send button from the home screen, then silently type the number I want to dial next to the “Call:” prompt.

Also, if you use the “Quiet” or “Vibrate” profiles, it does not make a sound when you dial numbers.

On the Curve, go to Options > Voice Dialing > and set Digit Playback to “Disabled”.

The phrase “too much governement” comes to mind. Always be wary of politions who focus on irrelevant issues like this. They are trying to distract you so that you won’t notice their fundamental incompetence in dealing with the issues that truly affect your quality of life. This is always a sure sign to vote out the incumbent as he has outlived his usefulness.
