Pair your Bluetooth and Mac to use BlackBerry as a modem

by on September 23, 2008

As a Mac user, I’m often left on the short end of the BlackBerry stick. I’m sure my compatriots agree. It takes just a bit of ingenuity, though, to get things working decently on the less favored platform. Today, we’re going to discuss how to connect your BlackBerry to your Mac, via Bluetooth, for tethering purposes. The video will go after the jump. Just a word of warning, especially for Verizon customers. If you don’t have tethering capabilities, this won’t work. Or at least it didn’t work for me. Make sure you’re set up with your carrier before you go through this setup process.

For username, phone number, and password information, head over to BlackBerry Forums. They’ve got a listing there.

Thanks to BBForums, as well as Dave Taylor, for giving me the building blocks for this process.

You can also check out our guide to using your BlackBerry as a modem for additional information.

I had real trouble trying to use bluetooth and persisted until I was able to tether my blackberry via USB. I am on Verizon and I have gotten this to work on my old 8830 and my new curve. I have been getting speeds of 400-500.

I’m attempting to do this with my Blackberry Pearl 8130 and Macbook. The one thing that is weird to me is that my bluetooth menu on my computer looks different then all of these posts and some of the steps seem to need certain things. Also when my bluetooth device is setting up and access the internet with your phone’s data connection is check then I click continue, it says configuring services and the spinning circle thing is going but it just continues doing this… How long is this configuring services supposed to take, I feel like I’ve been sitting here for awhile.

Ryan, are you sure your cell phone plan allows you to tether? I had the same spinning circle issue with my Verizon BlackBerry, and it’s because my plan doesn’t allow me to tether.
