If your BlackBerry is acting funny, chances are a simple reboot will do the job. The question, however, is of how to perform the proper reset. Some problems are small and can therefore be solved with a soft reset. Other problems are a bit more ingrained, and will require a hard reset. In this post we’ll go over the terms and how to accomplish them.
Soft reset
A soft reset is the simplest kind. It just reboots your BlackBerry in the quickest, easiest way. It doesn’t completely clear the memory, so if you’re suffering from memory leak this probably won’t help much. If it’s a more simple issue, though, soft reset away. To perform a soft reset, press: right-shift + alt + delete.
Hard reset
A hard reset can be accomplished by pulling the battery. This will solve most BlackBerry problems. If a hard reset does not solve your problem, your device probably has deeper issues.
Bonus: Double soft reset
If you need to perform a hard reset but really don’t want to pull the battery — maybe you have a big, bulky case around your device — there is an alternative. A double soft reset might not perform exactly the functions of a hard reset, but it comes close. To perform a double soft reset, press right-shift + alt+ delete. When the device lights up as it reboots, press right-shift + alt + delete again. That should do the trick.

Or use QuickPull Free (in App World) to perform a hard reset without having to pull the battery.
doesn’t work in my phone, maybe because I have quick pull?
have a message which says mep counter (0) on my new 9700 bold is there anyways I can reset the counters
I have a new 8530 will not start up have pulled the battery but nothing happens just does not want to turn on any help phone is only 2 weeks old.
@ken You could try taking the steps listed in this post but I suggest getting a replacement device as this one clearly shipped with flaws.

My blackberry curve 8900 has that weird issue: insret SIM card appears on the screen while the sim card is already installed I switched it off like 100 times, pulled the sim and put it back again, nothing seems to be working!yeah I also did the reset thingy not working can u pls help me:(!
@Hala – I suggest contacting your carrier and getting a new sim card – that one seems to be corrupted.
my 8350I keeps loosing the network. The dealer here did a soft reset. It worked for 30 mins and back to usual. The phone got wet a year ago and worked fine until 2 days ago. The dealer says the problems are because it got wet. As the phone is on 24/7, someone else recommended pulling the batter overnite.
Any suggestions
Tks
Steve
@steve I am pretty sure it is not because it got wet a year ago. You would more than likely see the issues much quicker than that.
The issue could be related to a bad sim card (they can fail) I suggest trying a new sim.
As it goes, pulling the battery on your BlackBerry is the best way to fix up glitches like this. Definitely not ideal but a pretty reliable method none the less. When pulling the battery, do it while the device is on and replace after 30 seconds or so.
my BB got wet 2 days ago. I pulled the battery, dried it in rice overnight etc. it now powers up, displays the right time, downloaded messages and emails. The trackball moves the around the screen but, I can’t select anything. Nothing happens when i push the trackball and then the screen goes blank after a min or so. The red light flashes indicating that i have un-read messages but the screen won’t come back up either. Did I power it up too soon after it got wet and fry it?
@skot nope I think 2 days was plenty to absorb all the moisture. It could be that damage took place before the moisture was all gone.
Try doing a battery pull as soon as the device powers on fully. Leave it out for a couple minutes and replace. Often times this fixes the keyboard after the drying process.
Good luck!
My Blackberry Curve 8300 has been acting very strange. It shut off and the only things that turn it on are if I plug the charger in or take it out, or I take the battery out and put it back in. When it turns on, it goes to my main screen, I can scroll around but it wont choose any options when I click on things (email, menu, mail)then a minute later, it shuts off and I have to start all over again. This phone is only a year old, and has never been damaged in any way. I have tried the soft reset, hard reset and taking the battery out. Nothing is working. Please help me!!!
@Kealsey Ok let’s look at your free memory – do you have a bunch of apps? how many are left running in the background? Do you have much pictures or video saved to your device memory?
When the internal memory goes low the device can start acting up in the manner you have described.
Hi Kealsey! You won’t believe it, but this happened to my BB also yesterday, and the strangest thing – as I see the date you’ve added this was also on the 13th of July 2010!! I can’t get anything done, it doesn’t even allow me to enter my sim password and just keeps telling me to unlock the screen.. I don’t know what to do, and I’ve tried doing a software update, deleted some apps to see if it’s a memory problem – and still NOTHING!! What to do? My BB will also be a year old in 2 weeks time.
My BB 8900 Curve has one message in SMS and MMS that can Not be deleted. However pre or post messages can be deleted, moved, saved, etc. Tried hard reset- no luck. Have latest version of AT&T software installed. What now?
@Walt – try doing a battery pull then go in and try and delete the messages again. Alternately you could try highlighting today’s date in your messages and using “delete prior” .
Another thing to try might be using the Desktop Manager, select the Back-up and Restore, then select the Advanced button, pick the SMS Text (DB) and clear it. This will delete all your sms messages so watch out.
I have a blackberry 8900,early morning it suddenly stopped responding.i made a hard reset then it launches the home screen but i can not click anything or cant scroll,i am not able to do any thing. No button is working
@Adity A battery pull is the best bet here and if that does not help then try reloading your OS software.
i have a blackberry bold, and this morning, the screen went white, i thought it was because of low battery. i pulled the battery (hard reset) and quickly connect the blackberry to my laptop using the USB cable provided. then, the screen went black and there’s a steady red light.
it has been like that for almost 4 hours now. i tried disconnecting the USB cable to turn it on, but nothing’s changed. tried the hard reset again, and still nothing’s changed.
could somebody help me pleaseeee??!!
@Maria That sounds like a nuked BlackBerry. Check out the tips here to try and fix that.

hello,i have a 8900 bold and some days now when i push the bb button, it doesnt goes to the menu
but only appears the y letter!i pull the battery 100 times but it keeps doin that.
wht can i do ?
pls help me!!!
@Gina It sounds like you may have a bit of moisture damage. Try putting your BlackBerry in a pair of stockings – battery out – then submerge in some rice for a day or so.
When the time has passed, replace the battery and try again. If the keys are still messed up then do a battery pull at that time.
Let me know if that helps.
hello, i have BB 8520, when i delete one app and must the reboot suddenly in the text “reload software 5520″ what is the mean…?
pls help me, i’m very confused….
@Raith it means that app corrupted your operating system and you need to reload it.
I couldnt remember my password while on bb desktop manager and on the 10th try it did some erasing it looked like and now it says reload software 513. I was initially trying to load the dvd i was given when i purchased my bb as i have a new computer now. my phone will not leave that page of reload now.
thank you…how do i do that
how do i reload my bb when it wants me to reload software 513
@Trix Here is post that describes the reloading / updating of your OS software

hi i have a bb 8520 and the middle button keeps freezing i cant go up or down or left or right and this is happing everyday for a few hours aday some times all day and this as been going on for over 3 weeks
can any1 help or have an idea why this is happening ?
many thanks
@mike Flaherty It could be caused by low memory. Do you have many apps running in the background? If you have social apps, how often are they updating themselves?
Do you save all your pics and videos to a memory card or are you saving them to the device memory.
I would start by looking at those things – move all media to a memory card, change social app updates to 20 minutes instead of 1 or 2, ensure you are closing out programs completely instead of just backing out of them and leaving them in the background.
Let me know if this helps.
hI, I HAVE THE BLACKBERRY CURVE AND I HAVE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH IT. YESTERDAY I WAS TALKIN ON IT AND IT WENT DEAD AND CUT OFF. BECAUSE IT WAS SO DEAD I FIGURED I NEEDED TO LET IT CHARGE ALL NITE SO THAT I WILL HAVE A FULL BATTERY. BUT AFTER I LET IT CHARGE IT STILL WOULDNT COME ON. I WENT AND GOT A NEW CHARGER THINKING THAT MY CHARGER WAS PROBABLY NO GOOD. BUT THE PHONE WOULD HAVE THE BATTERY SIGN COME ON BUT IT WOULD BLINK OFF AND THE RED LIGHT WOULD COME ON BUT THE PHONE WILL STILL NOT COME ON. I WENT AND GOT A NEW BATTERY AND ALL IT DOES IS THE LITTLE CLOCK COMES ON AND A WHITE LINE APPEARS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN LIKE IT IS GOING TO TURN ON BUT DOESNT. AND MY PHONE STILL WONT TURN ON. WHAT SHOULD I DO? ANY SUGGESTIONS ( EVEN IF I HAVE TRIED PULLING THE BATTERY)???? THANKS CLUELESS
@danielle You need to reload your operating system files:

my blackberry curve is not letting me do anything except move the trackball. the screen only turns on when i plug in the charger or i take the battery out and cmpleatly restart the phone but after i restart it, it still doesnt let me select anything or type anything. please help :/
@devonte I would backup any data you can using desktop manager then wipe the device and reload your OS – restore your data and you should be back to normal.
I downloaded an update on a application on my blackberry curve 8530 and it restarted. upson restarting it does everything fine until it gets to the main screen where it freezes on that screen as well as application permissions. everything is frozen except for the alt key. How do I fix this?
@neda Delete the application, reboot your BlackBerry , install the application again, do a battery pull.
That should work. If you have more issues there may be something wrong with the file you downloaded and you might want to touch base with the developers and make them aware of the situation.
Hello…My new bb pearl 8120 fell from my hands today and now it doesnt start. I read some where that I need to put it on charge for about two hours or so and then try a hard reboot. Have been charging it with a usb and hv tried a hard reboot a couple of times but the red light just glows and then the screen doesnt come up. Then the red light also goes away. Sometimes the keyboard light goes on and if I press the button for voice dialing, it responds, did my screen die. I just bought this phone and love it..can you please suggest what I can do? Can I get it replaced?
My blackberry has been slow the last couple of days. Today it popped up that the memory was low and i could delete some of the saved languages to free up space so i did this and it was fine. Anyway it carried on being slower than normal so i pulled the battery. After putting the battery back in now, after about 6 hours, the phone still hasnt got past the loading screen, white with the black clock,i dont know what to do. I tried to put it into the laptop to reboot, but it doesnt even recognise it on there either?!?!?!?!!please help
@erin unfortunately it sounds like something got corrupted when you removed those language files. Google “BlackBerry jl_cmder” for instructions on how to fix a nuked BlackBerry.
my blackberry bold just went crazy all of a sudden. First the screen went white with ·jum error 517. i took it to the service center and they “fixed it”. but then one day later it went crazy again, its like the touchpad has life of its own! i took the battery for hours but it doesnt work, what should i do??

@Ramakrishna Google Nuked BlackBerry for a way to bring your device back.
hi. i buy blackberry curve the propblem is after 3 weeks it’s turn all white and there’s like a clock turning around. please can you help me to my problem thanks…
@norver I would delete Facebook if you have it installed as it causes this sometimes. I would also connect to DM and backup everything possible as you will most likely have to reload your OS if deleting Facebook does not fix the issue.
i have a bb 9300 curve with t mobile carrier, i put other sim cards on my bb and MEP code is needed to unlock my bb,accidentally i used all my 11 MEP trials.is there any other way how to unlock my bb for other sim card usage?
@benz If you can google and figure out MFI then you may have success connecting the BlackBerry physically to a computer and unlock the device.
Aside from that you need to send the phone off to RIM to have them sort it out.
hi was wondering if u would be able to help a few days ago my blackberry started going funny none of the buttons would work it later seemed to fix its self but i lost the use off my O button i could live with out the O button but now none of the buttons r working al i can do is move the touch screen pad bit along can not get in to my messages of eamils or answer phone calls is their anyway this can be fixed because i can not live with out my phone many thanks
@jess it sounds like a memory issue. Try doing a simple battery pull when the keys start glitching. If it continues then you may want to try freeing up some memory.

hello, i have the same problem as norver san diego, people say delete facebook, but how can i when, it wont turn on properly in order to do so?? please help!
@Laura You can try deleting through Desktop Manager using the advanced options or you can try booting your BlackBerry in safe mode to delete the app.

What does mfi mean?is that a software to download?
@benz mifi is a service offered by some cellular providers which is basically a portable hotspot/wifi functionality. To see if your carrier offers it give them a quick call.
I have got a torch which i have to be re-booting very often because the dial pad brings up two numbers when i press one and all my data was wiped off with no reason . i need to know what to do
@peps I would look at upgrading the OS to the most recent available from any carrier. I am not able to tell why the device is glitching out.
all my data was wiped off with no reason on my torch. I also have to perform soft reset very often because the dial pad on touch screen brings ups two numbers when you only press one. what is causing that and how can i fix it.
@peps I have no idea what is causing that to happen. The best I can suggest at the moment is reloading your OS or upgrading to a more recent version.
I purchased a used BBerry storm 9530 .I tried to reset it cause when I dial my voice mail it goes to the previous owner’s number ,and I also couldn’t change the number on the visual voice mail . I went to security advanced options but I there was no option to wipe memory .what can I do to reset the phone ????
@Hhassan Here is a guide to wiping your BlackBerry
I have a blackberry curve, and It is not coming on, when I connect it with my computer through the USB, it blinks a red light. I tried using battery of similar model of bb, but it still did not come on. I don’t know what exactly is wrong. And can’t say what happen before it start acting that way.

Hello guys, I have a Curve BB and it is reseting itself while I`m on a call. The light turns red and then shuts off then turnig itself back on after maybe 5 minutes. It does a security software check, which it passes, and then it works. Sometimes it does this on every call making it impossible to talk. The other day it did the same thing while browsing on the Internet. I took it to the Carrier to have the softaware updated but it keeps doing it. Please help.
Txs
@chafito Grab the latest BlackBerry OS for your device (you can use any carrier version) and install that one on your device instead of the one that you have now.
grab the OS and installation instructions here: http://blackberryrocks.com/latest-blackberry-os/
hi today i upgraded my blackberry 8520 software system and when i booted my phone it was frozen….i tried everything i could…i removed the battery i tried the soft and hard reset and phone the is still frozen…….i really need some help because i do not no wat to do again
@Curlz I suggest repeating the OS reload/upgrade process. Something went wrong with the initial attempt so try it again.
Let me know if you continue to have issues.
Hi Can you help with my 8520. When writing texts, I press space bar once and the cursor continues across the screen for ages.
@mike Try doing a battery pull any time the space bar acts up.
i have a bb520 and when i use the camera it only takes negative images, can it be reset or do i need to replace?.
@Carlos Take a look at your picture settings themselves – I think someone may have switched them on you.
My BB9700 suddenly wasn’t able to receive sms messages. There were no saved sms messages in inbox when i try to look into it there is this note ” !Uncaught exception:java.lang.NullPointerException”
@rock Try this:
To clear the Messages database using BlackBerry® Desktop Manager, complete the following steps: (backup your device completely before trying this)
1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer.
2. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
3. Double-click Backup and Restore, then click Advanced.
4. From the list of Device Databases, select the appropriate database. For Email Messages, select Messages.
5. Click Clear.
6. In the Warning window, click OK.
7. Send a new message to the BlackBerry device. New messages now appear in the Messages screen.
Hey,
i have the blackberry curve 3G,
I had it for Christmas and today i came back from P.E and it was constantly on a white screen,
will i have to take it back or can i fix it my self ?
HELP x
@caitlin Marie – try pulling the battery and leaving it out overnight.
If that does not work I suggest reloading the OS to see if that gets it back to normal.
I have a blackerry bold. It went off suddenly when I was trying to remove the usb cable after charging. All effort to get it back on has been negative. I need your help pls
@Samuel Ashley When you plug it in do you see the red LED flash?
@Cooper
The red LED does not flash.
When I take off the battery with the charger still on, it indicates the battery is not in with a sign on the screen.
I put the battery in, I still see the sign but a bit dim this time around.
The red LED light flash a bit when tweaking the battery to touch the four contacts in the back of the phone.
@Samuel Ashley That sounds like a bad battery connection then – try prying the prongs up on the device and battery to see if you can get them to make consistent contact. If you can not bend the prongs enough try grabbing a new battery.
I just want to know if dropping a blackberry once or sth from a 1 meter distance does severe damage to it?
@T. Mohammed That would depend on what you dropped it onto. I have dropped mine plenty of times and it is still alive.
hi, i will like to unlock my blackberry torch but i used up the 10 attempts that i have. can i still unlock it.
Alright i have a BB Bold & when i try to make a phone call it keeps going from head set back to handheld speaker every second. I tryed a soft reset and a hard reset but i still have the problem; Help me out please dude.
@Ravee Try plugging and unplugging your headphones a few times – be a bit rough when you do it. Sometimes the BlackBerry gets confused and it does not realize the headphones have been unplugged.
my blackberry curve 9300 does not fully reboot after a hard reset what should i do please answer fast thanks .
@mido You mean it does not turn back on again? If that is the case I suggest connecting to Desktop Manager to see if it recognizes the device.
If the device is recognized then backup your data and reload the OS. This should clear up the issue.
If that does not help just let me know and I will offer more suggestions.
I have a Torch and when I send a contact to a friend that has a curve they cant delete it…
How can they delete the contact I sent them…
@Michael That is actually a little known glitch – when you send your contact info like that the person who receives it can not delete it for a while. The timing varies but it boils down to them just being patient and trying to delete it every once in a while. Eventually it will allow the deletion to occur.
I have tried to reset both ways you have insisted
I have been having a problem ..my blackberry curve 9300 simply froze ive removed the battery to see if that would work then rebooted .blackberry load comes up …then it freezes after it shows my service provider which is a telus screen ..now unsure what to do …were is the reset located
@Tj Connect to Desktop Manager – back up your data then reload your OS files. I can not tell why your device froze from the info you gave me but an OS reload (or preferably upgrade) should do the trick.
my blackberry curve is not turning on it is a black screen with a white battery with a red x going threw it . It is like my phone is not recognizing my battery. can you help
@Krista That does sound like a dead battery. On occasion they can be corrupted. I suggest popping over to a local dealer and asking if you can try out one of their batteries that is known to work.
If your device boots go ahead and grab a new battery. If it doesn’t boot let me know.
I have blackberry storm 2 I tried charging it. Te screen keep going off and restarting by itself during restart a white screen always flash for 4 seconds and go off, still my phone does not come on
@mazi Sounds like a nuked BlackBerry to me – try these steps to fix it
http://www.blackberryos.com/forums/blackberry-how-guides/6175-how-recover-nuked-blackberry-pictures.html
my browser wont open. soft rest and hard reset isnt working also. What could be done here?
@Aileen I suggest resending your service books and HRT to see if that kicks it back into gear. Let me know.
my blackberry curve doesn’t turn on unless i take out my battery but it would turn on for only 2 minutees or less then turn what should i do ?
@Melissa I am not sure exactly what the problem is. Did you install any apps or themes right before you started having the boot problems?
You could start in safe mode if there might be a problem app or you could connect to Desktop Manager , backup your device completely, then reload or update your Operating System (OS) files.
@cooper yes i install a few apps and thank you
I have a blackberry curve 8520 smartphone. After putting a new sim card in the phone,it shows an error reading “uncaught exception:Index 13> = 13″ and then it shows an “App error 523″ requiring a reset. Any suggestions?
@Eben It appears that your SIM card caused some kind of corruption in your installed BlackBerry OS.
I suggest connecting to Desktop Manager and reloading the OS that shipped with your phone (should be on a cd). If you do not have one you can get the latest OS from here, along with installation instructions:
http://blackberryrocks.com/latest-blackberry-os/

I have tried different wall chargers, took it out to my car and tried the car chager, tried the battery pull…which I have to do almost daily for one thing or another anyways…and nothing works! In fact, when I pull the battery, the pic of the battery with the red x on the screen doesn’t disappear. Like it doesn’t recognize a battery being in it at all!

Most of you need to reload your OS for the device i did notice a few with hardware prob,
you need to let a tech look at it googling won’t help. for those of you who need to fix software go to blackberry website and select model then download. when software is finished downloading it’s really a next, next finsh scenario.
And while it’s true that a soft reset fixes a lot of issues anda battery pull works for small things it’s by no means a permanent solution please reload your OS. Back up data and fix the OS or use this handy tool i found jl_commander.
Hitting the reset button for an App error or JVM ERROR just won’t work.
For that you need a reload.
I’ve changed the housing on my blackberry now it says no service
