Getting rid of the globe icon on your BlackBerry

by on December 4, 2008

Running through the comments of the past few days I found this one by Nick R.. He has an obnoxious globe logo next to his message icon, and wonders how to get rid of it. Honestly, I’ve never seen this logo before. Nick explained that he got it when he tried to load a webpage in a non-service area. His Bold prompted him to save the search so he could retrieve it once in a service area. Now he says it won’t go away. If you’ve had this problem, read on.

This is a saved search. I had never seen the logo before because, well, I’ve never saved a Web search before. As you can see in the screenshot to the right, it’s nothing more than an icon, much like your message or BlackBerry Messenger icon.

Getting rid of it should only entail clicking on the saved search, which appears in your main messages folder. Barring that, though, you could always just hit Menu when highlighting it and hit delete. Either way, the icon should go bye bye once you do either. If that doesn’t work, may I suggest a battery pull?

I get that exact globe icon on my Bold when the weather is pushed to my device via my in-box. Viewing the message makes the icon disappear.

Guys — this icon is for a “Browser push message”. Thats the correct term.

This same icon was driving me mad..
scroll through all your messages… one will have an icon of the globe bside it..
click on the message, follow the link and the notification will be gone !

Have had this Storm(9530) for about a week and one problem continues. When using the 9530 to place a call, a number of folks have commented that my voice is muffled no matter in which position I hold the phone. A call to both the 1-800 help line and taking it into my local VERIZON sales/service store confirm the same thing. The voice is understandable but it muffled. The VERIZON store tells me that BB is aware of the proble but the 1-800 help line says my voice in muffled but understandable but they are not aware of any such problem at BB.

Any help to correc the situation???

I’ve got nothing, Retired. Have you installed the latest OS update? I’m not sure that would help, but it’s worth a try.

Otherwise, is anyone else experiencing this problem?

yeah thanks for the help. Hidden deep inside one of the folders was a WAP message, found it and deleted the fuc£e$ and the globe disappered.

On the Bold, you’ll need to go into your main email account, hit menu and then select ‘View Folders’. The offending Browser Push Message can be found in the folder called ‘Browser Messages’.

Hope that helps.

Curtis, that did it. Thank you sooo much!

You cannot “highlight it and delete it”. It is an icon that sits above the main screen icons, and is not acessible by cursor. However, the initial method (locating the saved browser page in the message folder) DOES work. Thanks!!!!

I have the blackberry curve 8330 and every now and then I cant scroll down the thumb wheel works in all directions except down some times it locks up for a short time and sometimes for several hours. makes it almost usless.

Cooper September 14, 2009 at 1:13 pm

To fix this just do a battery pull while the device is on.

Wait 30 second and then replace the battery – should be all fixed.

Thanks for the great information in this string. I have had the annoying globe icon for awhile with a 7 beside it. I have gone to messages/view folder/WAP Push Messages (do not have Browser Messages) and it’s empty. Nothing I do gets rid of the darn globe icon. Anything else I can try or am I missing something? Thanks!

Dune September 30, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I am an idiot, sorry to bother you. I didn’t think to “scroll up” to find the Browser Message folder. Problem solved and thank you all again.

I have an annoying Icon above the Menu on the home screen, it has the number 2 next to the Facebook “F”

I have scoured folders etc but can’t seem to budge it, any ideas?

Cheers

Reply

Cooper February 4, 2010 at 10:30 am

@azakins – that indicates you have two new facebook messages / notifications.

If you have already been through your facebook updates etc then it may be a custom theme causing the problem. If you are using a custom theme I suggest swapping back to a default theme and doing a battery pull. When the device comes back on the notification should be back to normal. You can then go back to using a custom theme again.

HELP! I have 2 unread Yahoo messages of some sort, but I can’t find them. I’ve checked both email and yahoo messenger accounts. I have no unread browser or WAP messages. I reregistered my router. I’ve pulled the battery countless times. I’ve tried every suggestion I’ve read here and I STILL can’t get rid of them. I’m certain they’re Yahoo because they are identical to the one that appears if I get a Yahoo message. Any other ideas?

Reply

Cooper August 9, 2010 at 9:23 am

@Shannon If you are using a custom theme, try reverting to one of the default themes – doing a battery pull – reboot and see if they are still there. If they are gone feel free to go back to the custom theme.

Shannon August 9, 2010 at 10:39 pm

I use a default screen.

Reply

Cooper August 10, 2010 at 7:45 am

@Shannon Hmm ok try this then.

Go into your messages folder > menu button > view folder – look in every one of those folders for the phantom message.

Also go into your Yahoo Messenger and check to see if the notification is an update notification of some sort.

If you still can not find the source of the ghost messages then delete the Yahoo app and reinstall it.

Let me know if any of that helps.

Reply

Shannon August 10, 2010 at 10:52 am

I did all that and uninstalled messenger, did a battery pull, and the globes are still there. I’m now assuming they’re email related but there is nothing unread in any folder. How do I remove the email accounts? Unless you have other thoughts… Sorry to be a PITA, getting rid of them has now become a mission!

Reply

Cooper August 11, 2010 at 8:38 am

@Shannon Can you grab an app called ScreenMuncher ( find it in the list here )

Take a screenshot of the icons you are seeing and that will help us get to the bottom of exactly what kind of notifications they really are.

If you can not upload the screenshot into the comments, please email me at marketing@bbgeeks.com and I will respond there.

I tried to download screen muncher, but I kept getting a message about picking a version, but there were no options to click. Any ideas?

However-somehow, someway the globes are gone this morning. Just gone. One had been there for over a month and I got the second last week. I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. If they reappear, I’ll be back.

Thanks for all the time and suggestions.

Shannon August 14, 2010 at 11:01 am

Ok they didn’t magically diappear. My husband found them in BB messanger, in my contacts, a friend was trying to add me, but I don’t subscribe to BBM, so I guess that’s why I didn’t find them. Hopefully this all helps someone else!

I have this globe icon on my blackberry and I have tried to go to the messages main folder but where do I go after that. The icon is still there. Advice please. The icon is disturbing.
Thank you

Reply

Cooper September 3, 2010 at 8:24 am

@Ninnien Try looking for wap messages or browser related messages in any of the subfolders – messages > menu > explore

Reply

Gordon October 28, 2010 at 11:15 pm

@Cooper that process worked. Go to messages and found the content download messages. Deleted them and the icon went away.

DjDannyBoy October 29, 2010 at 10:15 am

THE SOLUTION (as provided by the link above to crackberry.com)

Open messages – view folder – browser messages – find the globe icon messages and open or delete them…GONE!!

Yes, the globe has gone! I knew it was a saved browser search just couldn’t find where it had been saved to. If this doesn’t remove the globe and you have checked all messages for an unread one with the globe icon next to it, it must be an error in which case try the battery pulls etc above.

Hey guys,

I have a Blackberry Curve 8520. I got rid of the yellow globe icon by clicking menu in SMS, then I clicked ‘view folder’… which then a list of folders came up. I went down to ‘WAP Push Messages’ and I saw the message with the yellow globe icon on the side of it. Basically check all the folders in that list and see if theres any messages with the globe icon… Hope that helps :)

Click on BB mail icon (envelope with globe on it), once in your mailbox click menu scroll down to view folder, then up at the top you should she BROWSER MESSAGES, click that and delete saved messages. THATS IT!
