It seriously annoys me when I flip through new BlackBerry applications and see ones that users can perform for free. The app might add a slight convenience, but it’s rarely worth paying the extra money when the function is available to you freely. This mostly goes for flashlight apps, but it also goes for most calculator apps. All it takes is some button pressing and a little ingenuity to figure out how to divide a restaurant bill using just a normal calculator. Still, there’s a new app in the store that might actually be worth it. It’s called MultiCalc, and it provides six specialty calculators in one. As the video above demonstrates, you can get many uses out of MultiCalc. The functions include:
BMI calculator, even though BMI is next to useless.
Mortgage payment calculator, which should come in handy.
Tip calculator, which you can do yourself.
Discount calculator, which you can also do yourself.
Monthly interest rate calculator, which should come in handy.
Calories calculator, which is about as useful as BMI.
If you want to know your BMI, just take your weight in pounds and divide by your height in inches, squared, times 703. That is: Weight / Height2 x 703 Yes, it’s easier to do that with a specialty calculator, but it’s not impossible on your own. Tip calculators are even easier. Want to leave a 20 percent tip? If you can’t do it in your head — and it’s real freaking easy — you can just type this into your calculator. Total Bill * 0.8 To yet your total bill, it is: Total Bill * 1.2 Looking at an item that is 20 percent off $75? Just do: 75 * 0.8. Is it 30 percent off? Then the formula is 75 * 0.7. Of course, I’m sure that the convenience of just forgetting these formulas and leaving the functions to a calculator does have value. If you feel this way, you can get MultiCalc for just 99 cents at the BBGeeks Store. It also comes with a free trial, which is always welcome. Still, I always recommend using the 99 cents on another app and just finding the formulas elsewhere. It always irks me just a bit to pay for something I can do myself for free.
