Deleting BlackBerry Maps from your device

by on October 17, 2008

There is nothing wrong with BlackBerry Maps, the default application which comes with your BlackBerry. However, sometimes you just want something better. Me? I prefer Google Maps. It’s what I use on my laptop, so it makes sense to use it on my BlackBerry as well. Not only does it work well with a GPS unit (not that I’d know, stupid Verizon), but it now features Street View and walking directions, plus they’re now rolling out transit directions. Problem is, you probably want to delete your BlackBerry Maps application if you’re going with Google Maps, right? Follow along as we go through the process.

This is a pretty standard deletion process. As you would normally, go to Options, then Advanced Options:

Click on Applications. You won’t find it the application on the list, though. You’ll have to go to BlackBerry System Software and hit the Menu button. In the menu, hit Modules. You’ll then scroll down until you see modules that begin “net_rim_bb_lbs”. Delete all of those files. There should be five.

That should free up some space on your BlackBerry for other applications and goodies. No reason to have two maps applications, right?

Can we get a comparison of AT&T Navigator vs. Telenav 5.1 on the blackberry? I know TeleNav just licensed it out to ATT but I hear it is a later version…with some features missing…story?

Also, is there a better spoken turn-by-turn GPS application for the blackberry?

Verizon 8830 with OS 4.2.2.196 has “Blackberry Maps” listed directly on the applications list. With 4 modules.

I have the 8320 curve. When I use google maps I find that I always get the wrong directions. This is coming from a strange fact that google maps, map quest and others use a different map setup. I would hope that they would change it.
