Add non-BlackBerry contacts to BBM

by on November 17, 2010

While there is plenty to like about the BlackBerry, there seems to be one feature that everyone can’t live without. I’ve talked to many people who were thinking about switching to the iPhone or Android, but couldn’t break away from BlackBerry for one reason. That’s BBM. We all love our BlackBerry Messenger. It’s just so convenient. In fact, I know BlackBerry users who disdain text messaging. Why can’t everyone just be on BBM? Obviously they can’t, but there’s a feature we covered in our updated guide to BBM that allows you to interact with them as though they had BBM. It’s not perfect, but does let you keep your regular contacts with your BBM contacts. When you open BBM, hit menu and select Add Contact. You can then choose from four ways to add said contact. The last item on that list is adding an SMS contact. Click it, and you can add someone’s phone number by typing in their contact name. You can then put them in a category and add them to your BBM contacts list. As you can see in the screenshot, SMS contacts are denoted by a different icon. Adding an SMS contact to BBM does not make that person a full-fledged BBM user. It instead creates an environment where BBMing and texting are done in one place. Instead of showing up in your SMS inbox, text messages from these users will go right to BBM, and you’ll be able to converse in the same manner. You won’t be able to invite them to a conference, send files, or add to groups. That would be a bit advanced. It’s basically all for consolidating instant messaging lists.

I have the latest version of bbm (5.0.1) on my Curve 8310 (I think) and when I try this, I don’t have an option to ‘add contact’. Is it because my phone is so old? Should I try and re-install the bbm? Can you help?

@Tiva Joy The problem is actually that your OS is does not meet the minimum requirements. You need OS 5.0 as well.

@Alejandro You will need to upgrade your OS to 5.0 at the minimum and have the latest version of BBM installed in order to see the SMS option.

Hi, is nice to know this, i am just curious about something as is not clear on the article, if i invite an sms contact and send messages to this contact, do they go via data or via my credit? (Will i be charged by my provider?). Thanks in advance.

@Ollin Unfortunately this technique does not stop you from being charged for sms messages as you would normally by your service provider. All it does is collect all of your conversations into one place to make it easier to follow.

Can’t you just upgrade your BB OS?

@mags as long as you are in your home area- on your home network, you will not see any charges for BBM messaging your contacts. All of the data used is part of your BlackBerry data package and is included in that billing.

If you are roaming on another network you will have to pay roaming data fees for any messages sent.

I’m going to Spain in a few days, and this made me curious. I have a pay as you go phone, which comes with unlimited internet and texting. However, I also bought a blackberry booster meaning I now have Blackberry Mail. Will it still cost me when I got to Spain?
