Do you know how to use caps lock on your BlackBerry? If so, feel free to skip this post. In going through our quick tips archives, I’ve noticed that sometimes we skip over the basics. BlackBerry vets know these like the backs of their hands, but others can benefit from these basic tips. As my Verizon rep once told me: “The most frequent BlackBerry question I get is how to move icons.” People are asking, and we’re here to answer. Today’s tip is truly quick: using caps lock on your BlackBerry. When I got my first BlackBerry and I needed to type a word or phrase in caps I took to holding down the Shift key. This ties up one thumb, leaving the other to cover the entire keyboard. This is obviously a pain. Ditto typing in a phone number or any other numerical string. I either held down Alt or hit Alt before every number. Thankfully, there’s a quick remedy. To use caps lock, press Alt and Right Shift. Now you can type a string of all capped letters — not recommended for your entire email, of course. To use num lock, press Alt and Left Shift. This will make entering serial numbers just a bit more efficient.

Great tip! It was always a pain for me to enter in numbers due their location on the keyboard.
Thanks again for the tip!
How does that work on a Storm where we don’t have Alt or Left or Right Shift keys?
On the Storm you hold shift or number for a second and it locks. You will see a small lock icon on the key.
Thanks for the tip! Excellent! I never knew :)
Very nice tip. I’ve not spent the time searching for this particular one and I read it on my Twitter this morning. Thanks to your tip I now know how to do the all caps thing! Kudos.
Is there a way to do this on a Pearl?
I was just about to ask the Pearl question as well!
Confused about the pearl as well. Got an 8130 and a lot of games won’t play if you don’t have num lock on. Please help.
Is there anyway to get get to the numbers and symbols if the “alt” key is broken. I cant type numbers, commas, periods, exclamation points, question marks, ect. Please help because its pretty annoying!
@Miah Yes you can press the symbols key (sym) and a full list will pop up – you can scroll to the desired symbol and click it.
Thank you so much for these tips! I’ve been trying for ages to figure out how to get a locked upper case or numbers! Much appreciated!
