Are you as smart as the top 10 percent of people in the world? While there’s no real way to tell, there is one logic puzzle that, according to Japanese businesses, can weed out the 10 percent from the 90 percent. It’s called The River Test, and it’s set up as any logic puzzle. You have an objective, and then a set of parameters that you must follow. (Anyone who has studied for the LSATs is all too familiar with this.) Apparently this one is tougher than your average, or even above average, logic puzzle. If you want to give it ago, there’s a free BlackBerry app that can keep you focused on the task.
For starters, while I haven’t checked with any Japanese businesses on this, I’m fairly certain they don’t give this as a test to senior execs. There is an answer, and that answer is probably easily findable with a simple google search. If you’re in line for an executive position, why wouldn’t you just look up the answer online? In any case, if you’re interested in the challenge, you can download the app. While you could just as easily work this out on pen and paper, having the app handy makes it a bit easier. It makes it easier to focus on the problem, and it gives you a visual interface. I find that it helps get my brain firing in different ways. If you’re ready to challenge yourself, go download The River Test from App World. If you finish, take a screenshot, upload it to Flickr or other service, and post the URL in the comments.

I’m glad this was free, I finished it in about a minute, no googling, just working it out in my head. Perhaps on paper it would be tougher, no easy visual to work with.
