Your BlackBerry as a computer mouse and keyboard

by on October 4, 2010

Sometimes I come across an app that really stands out from the pack. Most of the time I’ll see an app and think that it’s either useful or not useful. Rare is the time that come across one and marvel at the novelty of the concept. An app that overhauls your BlackBerry calendar? Excellent and useful. An app that turns your BlackBerry into a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or USB mouse? Now that’s novel. I’d never thought of such a thing, and to be honest when I first saw MobiMouse I didn’t think much of it. But then I saw it had five stars even after 41 ratings. It looks like this thing is legit. If you often use your computer to control PowerPoint presentations, or if you just want a mouse on the cheap, I suggest checking it out. While MobiMouse works with BlackBerry models all the way down to OS 4.5, I imagine that it functions best with those that have a trackpad. The trackball is all fine and good, but it doesn’t always provide the most precise movements. The trackpad will allow you to use the mouse more fluidly — almost like the pad on a laptop, but with MobiMouse you’ll be able to sit back from the computer. In fact, beyond presentations I think that the ability to sit back a bit is the greatest benefit of the app. I spend all day hunched over a computer, and would welcome a few minutes here and there where I could sit back in my chair and still operate the computer. That’s the idea behind MobiMouse. Alas, since I’m a Mac user I can’t do it, but PC users absolutely can. You can even type using your BlackBerry keyboard. Again, that’s not something I’d do all day, but it’s nice for a break from monotony. The app has a ton of different functions — so many that a list seems appropriate.

  • NEW! Media & Browser shortcuts!

The motion control using the Storm is apparently a new feature that has gone over well with users. I particularly like the inclusion of the escape key as the right-click and the ALT+trackball as the scroll wheel. As you can see, MobiMouse also allows you to set BlackBerry keys to act as arrow keys. If you’re still a bit skeptical about this app, there’s good news. You can try it for free. Those curious about turning their BlackBerry into a computer mouse and keyboard can get the free trial of MobiMouse. It’s also on sale, $6.99 down from $9.99. Again, it works on BlackBerry models running OS 4.5 and up, including 6.0 and including touchscreen models.
