RIM working on Enhanced Gmail Plugin?

by on July 7, 2009

It was about two weeks ago that we’d posted get a new BlackBerry Gmail app featuring push. In one way it was exciting. We’d been waiting for the combination of two-way sync and push for quite some time. In another way, though, it was a bit disappointing to hear. After all, it will only be available to Premier users, which means you’ve got to pay. Now we’ve got word, though, that RIM is working on an Enhanced Gmail Plugin, which will bring many Gmail features right to your BlackBerry.

gmail mobileFrom the limited details we have now, this seems like quite the plugin. It basically brings Gmail functionality to your BlackBerry. From the original forum thread, most of which I cannot read, the plugin will bring the following:

  • See your Gmail based emails in “conversation view” for simple topic management
  • Add and remove Labels and Stars to emails to keep your inbox organized
  • Archive and Report As Spam actions for mailbox management on the go
  • Search your entire Gmail mailbox

If this is coming as a standard add-on to BIS 2.7, that would be phenomenal. If it’s premium, well, we’re back at the same stage as the rumored push application. Still, it’s nice to see some progress on the Gmail front. We’ll obviously follow this one as it develops. In the meantime, you can sign up to be a beta tester, but it’s doubtful you get in.

Will this allow HTML mail? the google gmail client is almost worthless because of the lack of HTML and striping of urls.
