Yesterday, in celebration of the leaked BlackBerry Messenger 5.0, we discussed how to install BlackBerry Messenger. Within the article we linked to sources where you can download the application, both over the air and to your desktop. We also warned that you could encounter troubles. Practicing what I preach, I downloaded the 83xx version for OS 4.5 over the air. After a hefty file download, installation, and reboot, I saw that my BBM was gone completely. It seems to be a Verizon problem for those with OS 4.5.0.77. Even so, some people might not like the leaked messenger. After the jump we’ll go over what to do if you want to downgrade. Before you do anything, go back up your contacts using BlackBerry Desktop Software. If you have a Mac…sorry. I could be wrong (it happens), but I can’t find a way to backup Messenger contacts with PocketMac and do not have Missing Sync. If anyone wants to chime in, I’ll update teh post. Now that you’ve backed up your Messenger contacts, it’s time to say bye-bye to the application. Head into Options, Advanced Options, Applications, find BBM 5.0, and delete that sucker (see: how to delete BlackBerry applications). Now it’s time to reload. If you have BlackBerry Desktop Software, you can use the Application Loader to reinstall BlackBerry Messenger. Once you’re done with that, you can go to the Restore function and bring back your contacts. That should have you back up and running with the old software. For those who don’t have Desktop Software, you can download BBM over the air. Just head to http://yourcbcfamily.org/bb/curvebbm/ from your BlackBerry browser. Click the link, and you’ll be able to download and install the file. That’s what I did, and voila, BBM back and running — though with no contacts (so add me!). The caveat with the link, though, is that it’s designed for 4.5.0.77, so I’m not sure if it will work on other OSs. You can give it a try, of course, but remember that it might mess up your BlackBerry even more. I hope this helps. I was damn glad to find it after I spent a good while trying to figure out why BBM was not working on my Berry.

The new 5.0 is only for O/S’s 4.5.131 and higher. I have the Sprint Tour(on it as I type)and it works GREAT on mine glad I downloaded it!

I was able to install BBM5.0 on my g/f’s Verizon curve 8330, but I had to install 4.5.0.160 from Telus first. Unfortunately, (i think) because of Verizon’s GPS crippling, the location doesn’t work nor does the proximity alarm. Everything else seems to be working fine.

That is what the backup is for. Noone has reported that they have lost any data when backing up previous to testing the new BBM.

i downloaded bbm 5.0 on my curve 8900, but i’m not receiving pics nor voice notes. i get the msg asking me to accept or decline and when i accept it never downloads….what can i do?

Okay so no one has answered the mystery about why, when some people plug their bb into their computer, and then go to the App loader, BBmessenger does not show up! I am trying to get it back, and there is no option for me to check (or uncheck), and I’d really like my messenger back!

I have the new 5.0 Messngr on my bb but the only issue I have so far as when I accept pictures from my contacts they do not download or save. My contacts say the same when I sent to them…how can we fix this issue?

I had the same problem that I could not see people’s profile pictures on Blackberry Messenger. What I did was I turned the phone off, removed the battery, replaced it, then turned it back on. When I opened up BBM, at first the pictures weren’t there but then a couple seconds later they appeared.

hi. i have blackberry curve 8900 and i’ve been using the new messenger 5.0 for a while with no problems. 2 days ago the ‘recent updates’ stopped showing any updates for profile picture however it still shows changes in name and status. i even tried changing my profile pic and it wouldn’t update in other people’s messenger. i tried turning off my phone and taking out the sim and battery several times but nothing changed.

I have the curve 8900 and the new BBM came installed on my phone. For some reason my contacts cannot see my profile picture, although I can see it. Any suggestions?
@Ralph this is a common issue and usually clears itself up over time. It is important to note that if your friends are on the older BBm they will not be able to see pictures.
Im having real trouble with BBM. I have a Bold 9700 on the Vodafone UK network and it worked fine at first. Then about 2 weeks ago my messages were getting delayed and eventually not going through at all! I removed BBM, reinstalled it and I have had to re-request my contacts. Now they are all saying ‘Pending- Waiting For Authorisation’ and I have spoken to these people directly and they said they have not received my invite.
Can anyone help? Its driving me mad. I have tried reinstall and removing the battery etc….

@sasha Your best bet here is to delete them all and ensure they have deleted you. Then add them back one by one and test. It is a pain I know =(

I noticed that nobody from my bbm contact list can see my status! I’ve tried reinstalling it, deleting and installing it again and of course restarting the phone .. can anyone tell me how i can solve this problem?
@Imran this is not a unique problem. Many people are describing the same thing and it appears to be a bug in BBM related to the number of contacts you have. I have not found a clear resolution to this issue yet but I will keep my eyes open and post it when I find it.
Can anyone help me please….Why do my contacts status’ not change to “busy” if they don’t read their BB Messenger messages or PINGS after one minute? This worked fine in the old version…I am using the 9700 with BBM Version 5.0

I live in the Uk and on the o2 network. Just got blackberry curve 8520 and started to use bbm. Apparantely i had the old version as one of my friends asked why they cant see my profile picture. So then i download bbm 5. And upload a picture. But still none of my friends can see my picture and i cant see their pictures either. So im a bit frustrated as the whole point of having a profile pic is for your friends to see. Please help. Thanks
@crystal This happens on occasion. Mine too almost two weeks to start displaying the profile pics for everyone. Give it some time and it should sort itself out/

@preeti This is a common issue. Some of the known fixes are:
1. Do a battery pull
2. Switch from a custom theme (if using one) back to the default theme and pull the battery. You can go back to custom again afterward.
3. Close out any open conversations in BBM history so you are sure there are no active messages in updates, recent chats etc.
Let me know if any of those work for you.
i just got the new curve 2 and when people try to send me files (voice notes, pictures etc.) they don’t download even though i click save. Do you know what’s wrong with it?

also i was adding contacts to my blackberry messenger and one of my contacts has 2 added to it.. an SMS one and a blackberry one.. how do i get rid of the SMS one that somehow got added to my messenger?
@JJLL It sounds like you have connected your BBM contact to a contact in your address book. To separate them just go into the contacts (not bbm) – find the appropriate contact and remove the BBM PIN from the contact.
yes they are sending them through bbm and it won’t start to download it, it just stays at 0 KB
@JJLL Ok I have a couple suggestions.
First take a look at where the files are set up to save to. People have reported issues with saving files received through BBM to their memory card.
Change the save location to your device memory and see if the transfers work. Once received, move the files over to your memory card to save space on the device.
(Do this for every download or – open up the camera or video camera etc like you are going to take a picture > menu button > options
you will see a folder where you can change the save location your pictures or videos.)
If that does not work – try updating your BBM (I am guessing your are running .33 – latest is .57) http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/blackberrymessenger/

@JJLL It is quite simple to move your media actually. Just highlight the desired item (eg pic or video etc) > press the menu key > choose “move” from the list of actions and then choose the media card location.

hey, i had the blackberry curve then switched to the new bold 9700. When i backed up the phone and restored it in the new one everything was fine except the bbm display picture is still the same one that i’ve had using the old phone! so no matter how many times i change the display picture, people can only see the one i’ve had using my old phone!

@keko I would wait a little while and see if they show up – mine took up to a week to start showing up when I upgraded. If it is still not displaying pics by then you may have a bigger issue.
How do you delete a picture when it states file currently in use? It won’t delete! It is not saved at the receiving end. It is “stuck” somewhere and I need it deleted.
@Nicole – try doing a battery pull to see if it “frees up” the file in question.
Fixed:
1. Pressed alt and then BB menu
2. Selected the BB messenger icon
3. Then closed all conversations
4. Finally battery pull.
Everything ok now.

@william – I suggest waiting a while. My BBM took almost a week before it started displaying everyones pics.

@abdulMuhsen Alajaji: i am having the exact same problem. i have a bb tour 9630 and had upgraded the new OS version for Blackberry and had deleted the entire bbm contacts which also i had to re-install from my last backup. now, i am changing my profile pic on bbm to my new picture and still my contacts only see my old one. i had tried re-installing, rebooting and still nothing. my contacts still see my old pic and on my end, i see my new pic. did you find a solution at all? please help anyone cause this is really starting to annoy me. the updates and everything still shows and even when i try to update my pic it even says on one of my contacts phone that i had changed my profile pic but yet the old picture is still showing?????
@jprince This is just a glitch in the network as far as I can tell. Try doing a battery pull to see if it rights itself. Otherwise there is nothing much you can do besides wait for it to update correctly.
@Cooper: i appreciate the reply. but yes it is fixed Finally! i already had done the battery pull and everything else but how i got it to fix was actually a hassell. since a friend of mine works for our cell provider here he decided to take the ESN out and Serial # out and re-add it again just like programming a new # for my device. nothing was lost it was just adding a different # to it without wiping out the entire data. after that, YAY it worked, everything works and i am happy! thanks man for the reply.

it seems d display picture is a real problem with d bbm 5.0. I can see pictures of my older contacts but for all the contacts I added recently, its either they can c mine and I can’t see theirs, or the other way round. @ideriah Unfortunately this is an issue with the new BBm – I suggest being patient and the missing contact photos should appear over time.
Hey my phone recently got “nuked” and kept rebooting so I had to wipe it and then put the OS back on my phone a couple of things disappeared but mostly everything was recovered, however my bbm app was not so I uploaded it again and eventually restored my contact list through the email option, my list is up and running I CAN communicate with all my contacts I can see their pictures and updates when I scroll down my contact list BUT I do NOT have the “recent updates” category that shows everyones updates in the section at the top that appears above the contact list and chats ,my conacts say they can see my updates in their recent updates category perfectly fine! But once again I do not have the recent updates category section on my list ever since I had to put bbm back on my phone why is this? A few weeks before my phone got nuked ( it got nuked on yesterday june 7th 2010) I updated the OS to the latest version and previously before that I updated the bbm software to the one 5.0.0.57 and my bbm worked properly so I don’t believe software is the problem please help !!

I have same problems with others. Which is people on my contact can’t see my status and didn’t get my recent updates or what I’m listening to from my Bold 9700. I have reinstalling and reboot my BBM but still has not working.
I have 120 messenger contact. Someone’s told me to delete until 90 contact to make it work. But nobody can guarantee I get it works after I deleted my contact number until 90 contact.. :(

@fika There are definitely issues once you break that hundred contact mark – but 90 is still quite a few. These issues are cause by lag in the network and there is not much that can be done to avoid this. Over time (could be weeks) your info will be updated for all contacts.
I just got the BB Curve 8530 and have been using BBM with one of my friends.. She sent me a message today,i looked at it but didn’t reply. When i went to go back to look at it i couldn’t open up the chat again and now can’t open up a chat for any of my contacts…
Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Cooper maybe you can help me understand what could be going on. I sent a dirty pic to my hubby on BBM: the next day I went to BBM him (I was on vaca) and his BBM status was PU$$Y… did my sending him that pic do something to his status. He swears up and down he did nothing to his status. So, um, WTF?
Also, would his status show up like that if he forwarded that pic to someone? Or maybe if someone else sent him a pic? I’m still trying to learn how all this works. Thanks man! :)

@paco Patience my friend – it will update for them eventually. It seems as though the more people you have connected to you (and on the network as a whole) affects the process.
I am having trouble receiving pics on my BBM Some people can send me pics no problem.
With others it gives me the option to accept/preview/cancel….when I accept, it does nothing. All I get is a little tiny preview pic that I cannot see. It’s driving me bonkers!!!
I have a curve 8310, randomly when using bb messenger when I try to use the keys alt, z,x,c,v and return it will enter the following string b$. anybody have this happen to them if so how do I correct? It self corrects just as randomly as it starts.

@Sunaina I suggest waiting a while for the contacts to work themselves out. It seems as though the network will slowly update them as time goes on – mine took almost a week.

Hope you can help. I have a Bold 9700, I use BBM all the time. As of two days ago my display pic stopped showing on some of my contacts lists. versions are the same. I tried batt pull, taking bbm off phone and reinstalling. Nothing is working. Any ideas? i would greatly appreciate it. Kim
@Kim There is no solution for this unfortunately – I have heard of some people having some success by deleting contacts and all contact info then re-adding etc. but this is a pain in my opinion. particularly if you have a lot of contacts.
I would just ride it out. RIM is well aware of the problem.

I just upgraded to version 5.0.0.57 today. The issue I’m having is that when I send a message to a contact, and it says D (not R), their status does not change to busy. It still says available, even after a few hours. Also, I can’t set up an alert for when they are available, because their status never changes. I had no issues with the previous version. Thanks!!

i am using BBM 5.0.0.57 and everything was fine until a few days ago. I have changed my BBM profile picture about 10 times and none of my friends see this. They see an old picture that i used to have a few weeks ago. The pictures seems to be stuck and no new picture will override it. I have done everything from re-installing bbm messenger 3 times to doing a battery pull, to re-adding all the contacts…nothing seems to get rid of my old bbm profile picture…Is there a known solution?

@Sonya This is a known bug and it is really just a problem with the RIM/BBM network updating slowly.

@Hanim There are many issues with the BBM network at the moment. Try doing a battery pull to see if that speeds things up. Aside from that just be patient.

@shooosh Look to see if it is listed in your applications list. If so then it is installed but you have no icon. If yes then delete and redownload from http://blackberry.com/messenger

Try backing up your data and grabbing the latest OS for your device – then load Desktop Manager – be sure that messenger is checked off during the install.
hi! i have a serious problem with my blackberry. one day i woke up and my bbm was deleted! and my wifi wasn’t working. i got my wifi to work and redownloaded and added everyone again. today i woke up and same problem! what do i do?! its too many people to keep adding everyday !

@Slimz In your BBM profile there is a box for status and a checkbox for “show what I am listening to”
If you have already checked that box off then it is simply a waiting game until your device starts broadcasting it.
Unfortunately with the amount of traffic on RIMs servers there are all kinds of delays with status updates like that and profile pics etc.

@Slimz I don’t think so. It is more likely that you do not have the most recent version of messenger installed – can you verify what version you are running please?

@Slimz yes it is entirely possible that that functionality is not supported on your device due to OS limitations.

I have the blackberry bold 9700 and was having trouble changing my personal message as I’d change it but there would be no change – noone could see it, so I went to download blackberry messenger again where I found there was a new upgrade on it, I downloaded the new blackberry messenger and managed to change my personal message no bother but now I have the problem of not being able to change my picture, I’ve tried restarting my phone by taking the batter out and reloading it but there is still no change, I know several people with this problem also, is there anything we can do?

Hi i recently had my bb curve 8900 replaced and transferred all my backfiles onto the device. I have bb version 5 everything is working fine the only problem is that i cant see my bbm contacts display picture and they cannot see mine. What do i need to do to have it how it was before? thanks
@Kajal Unfortunately at the moment everyone is having issues with the BBM profile pictures. It appears to be an issue with RIMs servers and how they are processing the updates. They are surely working on it and I expect it to go back to normal in a short while.

@ryan Unfortunately there are lots of issues with BBM at the moment. Particularly with profile pics and status updates not being displayed for/to your contacts.
RIM is working on it although I am not sure when it will be sorted out.

Just DL’d New BBM. Now when I read a QRCode that links directly to a streaming video (3gp), it stalls in the media player while buffering – never gets to the loading stage. Worked fine before. @mohd Sometimes it takes weeks for the display pics of your contacts to start showing up properly. One way to ensure you will get them is to have less than 100 contacts. Over 100 and there seems to be very infrequent updates.

@Den as for not being able to see other profile pictures – this is normal and there is no real fix for it. They should start showing up eventually.
To add your own profile pic simply open BBM and scroll all the way to the top of the screen – press menu > view profile > scroll over the box in the top left corner > menu > change display picture > choose a picture > save.
Hi all, I have the tourch 9800 and am facing a problem with the blackberry messenger that is when sending a broadcast I keep on re-inviting some of my contacts … Any way to solve this problem note that I have the latest messenger on my phone… Thanx

Is your BBM deleting contacts when you send the broadcast message or is it asking you to reinvite contacts already in your list?

@Jennifer This is a common problem and the only real thing to do is be patient. Eventually the profile pics will return.
One thing you can do to help it along is reduce your number of contacts to less than 100.

Hey I have the same question as Mool and Abdulla… what we all did was press clear for our recent updates and for me it was an accident, But I am unable to recover my recent updates. Do you guys know how to recover recent updates after they were cleared?

@Joe Unfortunately once the updates have been deleted they are gone for good.
@cooper actually all it did was delete the old recent updates but after new updates happened it came back. i was just scared it was gone forever

@nouf There are all kinds of problems with the BBM service lately due to the number of people using it. There is no fix for this problem other than being patient – sorry.
Hi – i have a blackberry curve 8520 – i just downloaded the new BBM and it works fine. I told my boyfriend to do the same – he has a blackberry 8900 – but he seems to have lost BBM all together now. He has tried re-installing it and it still isn’t back. Help?
@Brigitte If launching Desktop Manager and reinstalling BBM through the standard app loader does not work then I suggest deleting BBM from the applications list and reinstalling using the following download link:

@Arina Just be patient. With all the new BBM users on the network, it has caused a problem with the profile pic updates.
Essentially you update your profile pic and others (as well as yourself) may not see it for a few days. There is nothing that can be done to make this better besides lowering your number of contacts to under 100.

today i have received a broadcast message about 50 times from my bbm buddies saying:
“reset code for your picture to start changing 393928281717. post to all contacts to update your display pic. this message is to inform all of our users, that our servers have recently been full, so we are asking for your help to fix this problem. we need our active users to re-send this message to everyone on your contact list in order to confirm our active users that use blackberry messenger. if you do not send this message to all your blackberry contacts then your account will remain inactive with the consequence of losing all your contacts. etc. etc”
is this true? because i havent seen any pic updates and my friends cant see my pic update. and one friend said she sent the broadcast and her pic got bigger.

That message however is completely fake and RIM would never send a message like that over BBM. Ignore it and any future message like it.

@Emily You need to have both OS5 and BBM 5 to display that information in your BBM status.
I can’t see other contacts display pictures and neither can they see mine! What do I do?

why is it, when i try and enlarge someone else’s pic on bbm it goes really small
i have got the curve 9300.
I have had his phone since christmas 2010 and since i’ve had the phone the blackberry messenger will not display my picture. Also, I can only see a few peoples pictures.
I called up my network and they advised me to reinstall it, which I have done a couple of times, but this doesnt resolve the problem.
They also advised me to restart the whole phone, and again i have done this various times, and it hasn’t resolved my problem.
My blackberry messenger also comes up with a error saying that my registration status has failed, even though this comes up I am still able to chat to everyone and everything works properly (except for the pictures).
This is very frustrating, help!
@kaara This is an ongoing issue with BBM and I am not sure when it will be resolved. As far as the BBM pictures are concerned you just have to be patient and they will eventually return.
Hi Cooper, im having some problems with my bbmessenger, y change my BB Javelin (8900)to another 8900 but I make a Restore of the contacts some automatically where in my contacts but others i have to re-invited… then some contacts just shows the pin# not their names and they are already contacts… can u help me??
@Natalig There is not much you can do Natalie – something messed up during the restore. I suggest deleting the contacts that are PIN only and reinviting them.
Or you could try deleting all your contacts and attempting to restore from your backup again.

I have a Storm2. I am running 5.0.0.713. When I send or receive a BBM to a BBM contact (not non-BBM)the message does not show up in my inbox. It’s there, invisible. I can click on it and it pops up to a new window with the message. But it is invisible in the inbox. Any ideas?
@aTALL1 Try clearing the conversation with that particular contact then doing a battery pull.

@brandon It will stay pending until they have accepted your request. If they have ignored your request it will also stay pending.

@gabi the status and picture issue is common and is not something you can do anything about at the moment. That is all RIM.
As for not being able to send messages – is that for all contacts or just some?
Try a battery pull and clearing the current conversation to try and kick that into gear.
i can not send or recieve bbm messages, even when i have full signal and full credit.
I am also not able to view profile pictures.
I have taken my battery out AND reinstalled it, but it isnt doing anything to help. What should i do?
@lizzie The profile picture issue is widespread and is a network issue. There is nothing you can do to fix that. As far as not being able to send or receive BBM messages – Try resending your service books and re-registering your Host Routing Tables.
i have a blackberry curve, and when i go to download the latest version of blackberry messenger (5.0.1.41) on app world, it is requested a user ID. i applied for one online. and when i type this in my phone to download the blackberry messenger, it just doesnt stop loading. I press the back button and it says ‘you must agree to the terms and conditions to use this blackberry app world feature’ but these terms and conditions are no where to be seen HELP!
@Leonie Log in from a computer and ensure you have all your account info up to date. Paypal, security question etc.

@Lauryn Try upgrading your BBM to at least BBM 5.0 and you should be able to do what you are asking.
I have the blackberry Bold 9700. I too LOVE my BBM and LOVE to post various status’ during the day. I can change my picture and people can see the new picture but they cannot view my status. What’s strange is that everyone sees a different one. For ex. maybe one I posted two weeks ago or last week. I truly want to get to the bottom of it. I have 127 contacts. Thanks
Just so you know I just upgraded BBM and my status works. When I called Rogers they told me it was glitch. Others told me that if you have over 100 contacts the status won’t work but now it does so if in doubt upgrade. Thanks

@kayla The status update issue is unrelated to your hardware issue.
The problem is with the actual BBM network and there is no fix at the moment. Just be patient.

i had taken one of my pictures and sent it to a contact. a couple days later i tried to delete some pictures off, and it says that those couple of pictures i sent cannot be deleted they are in use…….how to i delete them, and why is it saying that.

@susie Try using menu > switch applications on your home screen. If you see your media icon in the list along with phone, bbm etc then click on it.
Once in the media section choose menu > close.
That should free the pictures from being “in use” and you should be able to delete as normal now.

For some reason, one of my BB Messenger contacts display picture does not update. Meaning that when she puts a new picture, everyone sees the new one and on my BB it keeps the same for over 2 months.
I am new to blackberry and have recently set up my bbm messanger with my service provider and I have also down loaded new 5.0 version on to my phone but i can not view my profile or see any stauts’s basically all i can do is chat. what am i doing wrong? would be greatful for a little help
@Danni You are not doing anything wrong – the network is very congested and RIM can not keep up with the updates at the moment. Just be patient for now.

I have a bb curve and after it came back from repair, BBM always says that registration has failed and i will not be able to use all the features of BBM properly. When i press retry nothing happens, except the same message popping up again. can you help me solve this issue??? Since yesterdat I’ve put a blank personal message and now I can’t go in to the personal message bar and their is like a smar bar but my contacts see a small square with OBJ in it….What can I do?

@Neo This is most likely due to poor network connection on his part or yours. Essentially the network is having a hard time communicating with one of your devices and therefore is not delivering the messages in a timely fashion (if at all).
There is not much that can be done about this unfortunately.
Hi , I want to deactivate or romove the (show my location option / time zone info ) from my BB messenger , is there any thing i can do to remove this option totally from BBM . I know I can unclick it but i actually i want to disfunction it totally .. is this possible ?

Hey there!! I’ve got the BBM 5.0 and recently got a request from someone I don’t know, and I want to decline it…however I can’t open or delete the request!! I’ve tried upgrading and restoring, but this didn’t help either. So it just stays there! Plz help!!!
@LiL Try doing a battery pull – they may have cancelled the request and it is just stuck on your screen. Let me know if it goes away.

Just got a bold 9700. At first I down loaded bb application world and was chatting with my friends when they all complained they can’t view my picture. So tried uploading my picture but couldn’t find a link to where I can do that. I’d to ask my friends how they did theirs and also went online for help on how I can add my picture to bbm. After getting help frm my friends and internet,and tried uploading my picture, I found out that their is no ‘view my profile’ when I clicked the option in my bbm. I only saw ‘edit my info’ and their’s no provision for adding picture. Please whatelse am I to do because I want to buy bb for my siblings so we can all say connected but, this issue am having is discouraging. I need your help asap!!!
