In the BlackBerry world, there’s always something to look forward to. Most of the time it’s a new device — we’re currently waiting on the Onyx and the Storm 2, both of which should prove to be excellent additions to RIM’s lineup. Sometimes, though, it’s a bit of software, like the Skyfire browser. Right now I can’t find myself excited for anything else but the upcoming BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac. It used to be such a pain to find a PC on which to perform all my Desktop Manager functions, including OS upgrades, so having it come for Mac is a huge development. We’ve seen a bit of it before, but the fine folks at Boy Genius Report have played with it for a while and have now previewed it. So let’s take a gander.
One interesting thing we have to share with y’all is that there doesn’t appear to be an option to load different operating systems manually. This is probably RIM’s way of “blocking” unofficial OSes, but it’s not really just blocking it, it’s disallowing anyone from installing a BlackBerry OS who doesn’t have an internet connection as they are downloaded directly from RIM.
We’ll see how that changes when RIM officially releases the software. That still figures to be sometime in September. Just a few more weeks…

Just the fact that there will be SOMETHING for the Mac is good news. I have none of my personal contacts, photos, etc. on my Storm because Storm & MacBook just glare at each other like grumpy children in the back seat of a car. My work info updates seamlessly from Outlook, but I’m HUGELY frustrated by the fact that I’ve had no personal info/contacts on my Storm since I purchased it — other than those that I laboriously entered manually onto the device itself.
