I have been notified of an internal memo within T-Mobile confirming that the CUPCAKE update will be sent to G1 phones by mid January 2009.
This “Over The Air” update by T-Mobile for G1 users should be received as soon as Sunday January 11th, 2009.
G1 owners will receive a pop up notification automatically from T-Mobile - Then you would simply approve the upgrade and it is done automatically.
The memo described what is in this G1 update and it closely mirrors what I listed here at Google And Blog of the Android CupCake features.
Just in time for those with a G1 in Washington DC on Tuesday January 20th, 2009 to video record the historic inauguration of Barak Obama as President of the United States.
*** Mark Murphy has echoed my concerns about this update in regards to video recording being included, as from what we understand there are still kinks to work out in the Android CupCake path especially for it to work on the G1, BUT it is what was listed as a feature in the upcoming update according to the internal T-Mobile memo leaked ***

I saw that and am surprised video recording would be included in an update as early as next week for the G1, but it was listed in the internal T-Mobile memo.
I updated the post with this as I share your concern on if there is an update this soon that video recording would be included.
In a week we will see if its valid or not.
What about thoes of us who have unlocked g1′s I haven’t had to experience an ota update yet so I’m quite in the dark. So I guess my question is will it work out on att the same way? I mean will I get a notifacation from tmobile, google, or att? Thanks in advance, Justin

This update would come from T-Mobile so only service subscribers would get it automatically.
You could update it manually via an upload and several steps or you can get the master source which would require some time and programming steps – http://source.android.com/ – which CupCake has already merged into.

I have not got any updates and I bought my phone off ebay someone already used it once but I did a hardware reset and activated it with tmobile what’s wrong with it and will I get the cupcake thanks.
@ c rich….go the your setting,then scroll down to About Phone ,then scroll all the way to the bottom to Build Number. Under if you see something like this > kila-user 1.0 TC4-RC 30 and some numbers then your up to date.

I am skeptical, like Mark Murphy, on the update as Dianne is a VERY authoritative person on the Android team so her words of caution are valid.
I will stand by my source that an OTA update will happen next week and Sunday would be the EARLIEST but most likely by the end of the week.
My current opinion is that IF there is an update it will be a T-Mobile modified version of CupCake for the G1.

As of 11:11am PST I have not received any OTA update or absolute confirmation of such.
If anyone claims to have received an update past RC 30 please include either a photo of the new build number on the G1 or a direct screenshot.

@Eric….I also run the g1 with out data plan, I got the RC30 build when turning on my wifi…So if the RC30 was sent out the same way then yes we should be able to get it.

i was just surfing but only i heard of 2 people with this update the guy in this blog and the guy in the market they both said there old apps were delete due to the cause of the update. yet no one from this blog except that guy who dissappeared has gotten the update i heard or read ones usually turning of the phone a couple of times will search for updates but i will keep you posted, i would recommend if any body gets the updates please comment

Guys, I wouldn’t believe anyone who says they got the update yet because there is no proof to substantiate any of their claims. Lets keep in mind here, this is the internet and so far all we have are rumors and speculation.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed with the rest of you that we get the cupcake update in the next few days but I’m not holding my breath until then.
But, like others have suggested, anyone who gets the update, please post details and screenshots, not just vague he-said she-said garbage about a blog you read that you don’t even post a link to.

There is no update as of yet, called t mobile about an hour ago , all they said was sometime this month. Just a lot of speculation out here, they also said it will be (over the air update).

I love my G1, but I can’t get over my issue with the battery life. Even with the GPS and Wi-Fi turned off, and the screen brightness turned down, the battery can’t last a whole day. I wish they would fix this issue before adding cool new features that will drain the battery further.

People need to stop calling TMobile about this. We will get the update when we get it. All the time spent answering the stupid questions that 1500 people asked already is time that they can’t spend doing real work like getting updates out.
If you have a new issue call TMobile and report it. If you are just don’t have anything better to do call someone else.

Actually I used to work for TMobile when I lived in Savannah. They have this weird color alert system and when one department gets to many calls, they pull the tech people to help answer phones. Sidekick was its own department and whenever there was a rush of calls about a sidekick update they would pull anyone who knew anything about Sidekicks to help answer the phone because to keep hold times low. I would imagine it is the same way for the G1.
Cupcake…… this is the only blog out of so many more… that I have heard of a release date. What I can’t understand is this, and I belive I’m speaking for every g1 user in america who know about this update. You ready???? If its coming out sooooon so why isn’t all over the place on google, t-mobile and other site. Former employee. That place is crazy. You get graded on how happy you sound on the phone. You aren’t allowed to say the same thing over and over. You are forced to say things like “It is wonderful sunny day at TMobile.” or “Thanks for calling TMobile where we love our customers.” You can say anything happy but you can’t say it over and over and it can’t be plain. It really is obnoxious. Anyway, I just feel bad for them because the last thing you want to do is say “I can understand how you would wonder that and I really appreciate you calling to ask.” when it is the same obvious question you have answered 154 times already.
Personally, I belive that this update is well worth the wait. So I’ll just go about my normal daily activities, and be surprised when I get the little beautiful pop-up box saying there is an update. Haha. Google has actually done a great job, with how fast they have responded to our desires. This is a large update, that brings many wanted changes, not many necessities. So when the update comes people should be thankful, even if its in April!
i think i got the pop up notification last night around 9:33, it said UPDATE CONFIGURATION or something like that, but my phone was freezing and i had a bunch of covos open and i acidently denied the update..

I don’t know what people are doing with their phones but i charge my phone over night i go to work from 830am to 8pm and then i dont plug my phone in till i go to bed at like 11:30-midnight. And considering what the phones do the battery lasts a pretty decent amount of time.Its not a phone its a computer that happens to have a phone on it.

I use my phone for more. I play game on it while at work look up phone numbers, listen to music. and still lasts me all that time. once and a while it will drain quicker but thats when i power use it but any cell phone with power usage will do that

Calling T-mob every day for the same reason when the people you call keep telling you they dont know will just get you blacklisted. Also, ppl will think you are a total jerk. Its not like u gonna do anything when your feelings get hurt. So quit whining lol. My g1 lasts the whole day but mainly depends on what I’m doing with it. Plus if I disable data I get 2 day easily. I find that its fairly dependent how you charge the phone, whether on or off. It seems the phone battery charge is optimal when charged off, just confirmed this with ma test. Oh well that’s life and this update seem more of a burden with all this speculation.

I got the extended battery for my g1 from an online company called seidio. Last the whole day with internet music email and 3g use without ever hitting the yellow/red on the battery meter. Woot!
All the features that this update is offering should’ve been included when they released the G1. This phone is supposed to be an iphone killer. One handed operation and finger friendly and everything. It is beyond me that they didn’t include a soft keyboard. How the f#!@k are you going to be a competitor with the iphone with the most hideous of all music screen and no soft keyboard and the worst 3mp camera with no flash. A waste of the accelerometer built in. Even Watching videos on Youtube doesn’t fill the screen completely with video there is a thick black border around the video.
I am not gonna hold my breath at all with this one. The G1 will be lucky to get some af the features from the OTA. I’m almost positive that the cupcake update will be ready and especially for the new G2 aka HTC Sapphire that’s coming. No official release date yet but its branded with T Mobile and is gonna be running Android. Check out phonedog.com for more details. But um sure someone at xda-developers.com will do something for us to have the full cupcake update on our G1. Those guys over there are genius’s.

For all those people whose batteries don’t last go to the market and download power management. I put that on my phone and it lasts forever?from 6am to about 11 pm and I use my phone a lot for music,surfing the net,and phone calls. Every once in a blue moon I will have to charge it but that’s only cause I didn’t let it charge long enough when it wasn’t in use. Kill your battery then charge it for like 10 hours that helps also.
Too many people now have this false idea that G1 and Android are synonymous, and there are pinned threads such as “what updates do you want next?”. It leaves people with the false impression that the android team is actually working on stuff that will update or effect the G1 in any important functional way. If you read the goggle forums it becomes clear that the version of android for the G1 is a one-shot deal riddled with proprietary code and the whole cupcake “update” is really sort of like XP being developed over windows ME. The G1 has Google’s version of ME. Don’t get me wrong, I love the G1 and Android is cool, but I hate to disappoint you folks who think cupcake will be coming to the G1 in an OTA update. It won’t. Marketing and a smoke cloud of misunderstanding fueled by wishful thinking has everybody confused. Start getting used to the idea that the G1 is static and Google is looking to the future of the OS itself, not the G1 even though it has gogole printed on the back. Am I bitter? Yes. I started to express my public input over at google groups, but I thought I’d make a suggestion here too since the forum title is sort of misleading.

To those complaining about the g1 having bad battery life, its true it sucks but over time it gets better. I’ve had my g1 for about 2 months now and when I wake up from 9am and go to class at 2pm to 9pm and not charge till like 3 or 4 in the morning my battery is still good. Its just a matter of time. At first it bothered me but I was like ” its whatever I’ve waited for a phone like this and I’m not going to just back down and return and get something like the samsung behold which I thick sucks” anyway about cupcake I’m just going to wait and wait and when you least expect it… its there and you’ll be jumping up and down like your freaking 6 years old… so be patient

I don’t neccessarily think its fake, but I think it’s gonna be a few weeks before they will release it(especially now that the Palm Pre is coming out and seems way more advanced than the G1 and Iphone. I havent got the update yet… but a little icon called “folder” randomly appeared on my homescreen when I turned on my phone in the morning… when I click on it, it behaves like an ordinary folder… and opens a window thats empty… you can even add your icons from the homescreen into the folder…

Question, do you think that maybe they will not release an update for the G1 because then no one would buy the G2? If they kept updating the G1 to have better features, then why bother buying the next G phone?
I for one do believe there is somthing coming to the g1, we have seen videos of the softkey, so whether or not it is gunna be the “cupcake” everyone is talking about or a developer app somthing good is coming to the g1. Just gotta be patient more then anything.
I believe that the update is real because didnt the sidekick lx get an update that gave it a camera and stereo bluetooth. If a crappier phone can those types of updates, why cant the g1 get them.

I think everyone needs to calm down. I too, was so excited when I heard about the update. I googled and scoured the web trying to find it for download or force ota to my phone but, alas, no cupcake. I think from all the sources I have read that this may or may not be an actual update and you may be stuck with what you have. Also, I think that it has been hyped up to be something that its not and that everyone thinks this will fix everything when it won’t. You are only signing up for a whole new list of bugs and issues. I hope it comes soon if it even exists and I hope everyone can take a xanax and calm down. No one seems to know anything and everything they say is conjecture.

From what i gather with the g1 is that it is tmo’s answer to the i phone and it has its plus and minus you cant expect an exact replica of the i phone it has to have tmos touch. but with this open market i think that the poss for the phone are only limmited to its subscribers and developers i would really hate for t mo to just come out with a g2 and leave g1ers out in the cold and i dont see it happening anytime soon but who knows. i really cant figure out for the life of me whi both the i phone and g1 have come out with no video recorder. i can scan barcodes for god sakes

Well he posted it in a post way up there somewhere or you could simplify your life and take a picture of your build number which you get to by going to “settings” then scrolling all the way down and then go into “about phone” and scroll all the way down again. Ok guys this phone the g1 that all of us thought was gonna be the best phone for the next half year. Was a joke, tmobile was horrible at advertising it and to tell you the truth its an embarassment to have this phone. Compared to the iphone it is nothing. The app store for iphone has over 50 thousand apps the g1 has about 500 and its been out since october. there prob isn’t a cupcake someone just wanted to start a rumor. Tmobile obviouslu wouldn’t lie to 80 percent of its customers and say that they don’t know about a cupcake. Because if they say that there isn’t one then people are gonna sell their g1s and get an iphone. So if you think that there is a cupcake that makes this trash phone up to date then its not gonna happen. I could go buy a regular touchscreen phone and get everything this phone has and spend about 200 bucks less. It doesn’t even have a flash like that’s rediculous the sidekick 3 had that god dammit. Imma go buy myself an iphone as soon as I put this thing on craigslist
this is why i bought a g1… i had a sk slide which has a faster processor and at the time newer os than the sk lx but t fn mobile decided to only release the video ota to the lx and not the slide. so i said fu and was gonna get an iphone. but want to stay with tmobile so I prordered a g1. I’m not interested in having a phone that tmobile is gonna just forget about. I sincerely hope that this is not the case and that an ota is coming soon even if its after the 15th.

Okay i just got off the phone with a tmobile rep and a g1 specialist, it is real it is not fake and it is OTA but the trick is, they have started it and the order goes as the first people who pre ordered it, then everyone else. she said it might take a couple of days but it is definantly real and it is with the video cam, the on-screen keyboard and what ever else was mentioned above. WOOT so for everone else just be patient and it will pop up on your phone saying upgrading or something of that sort.!!

So, I just got off the phone with a T-mobile rep from the tech end of things. I finally got a real answer… before today, no one seemed to know anything about it… but todays conversation brought concrete answers, though not the one I wanted to hear…
Cupcake is real… but… it probably won’t be released for quite a few weeks due to bug fixes.
So probably not until mid February.
We’ll all have to be very patient…which is hard…cause I WANT IT NOW!!!!

If Tmobile was really concerned about the satisfaction of loyal customers, they would: 1st, replace the battery that can’t keep up with the phone that they released(Mine drains while on the wall charger doing nothing). 2nd END THE SPECULATION. 3rd allow those who are ticked (me) to upgrade at the lowest cost or get released from the contract. whaddya think. Im sorry but after reading these post im completely annoyed. What is the big freaking deal with just waiting you guys act like this phone has been out for a year hell not even 6 months. Just shut the hell up already about the update it will come when it comes. They have G1 ads all over tv posted on the bilboards up and down 95 especially in the maimi area where im at. yep… i just got off the phone with the pda dept. i called to get a replacement battery and threw in an update question at the end. and pretty much got the same answer. flash, soft keyboard, vid recorder being worked on but not ready yet.
and just becasue i wanted and exxtra battery i called tmobile for a replacement as well. And theres no information on and update for G1 at all. so you guys can wait for cupcakes til your blue in the face your better off making some in the kitchen becasue its certianly not coming to the phone this month

@sean, yes they are sending me one free of charge. I was told by tmo that they are aware of the battery problem and are sending out replacements till a permanent fix is approved.
i dont think they officially approved that yet. the rep first stated that they werent doing a replacement for the g1 batteries he asked some questions i gave him very good answers and then he said he would send a replacement to my address should be there this week. also told me a site i can go to get a particular charger that would charge the phone and the spare battery that i will now have. tmobiles customer service has always been the reason why ive stayed with them.

About the battery issue, I found a really simple way to drastically save battery. If you know that you’re going to be in an area without reception or that you wont use it no matter what, put it in airplane mode. I seriously wont lose one percent over three hours of my battery life when I do this. Maybe this is like common info but I thought I’d share it with everyone.

@cupcakemyth, Just talked to them 15 minutes ago… unfortunately, you’ll get a different answer from every rep… but this particular rep was pretty well informed.
She mentioned Cupcake before I could… and when she looked in her notes, she told me the release was on the 11th…but the release was not coming to everyone at once… She wasn’t sure why it was being done like that.
She also stated that the phones bought as of now would come updated and ready to go.

I called tmo 3 minutes ago asking about the cupcake update and the rep stated that it is DEF out and has been snce the 11th or 12th. its not going out to everyone right away like sean stated but is currently going out to all g1 cutomers 1 by 1. she was well informed and im sure everyone at tmo now knows the answer to these questions. hope this helps

Hey guys i been reading this blog for the past couple of days and i have searched the internet and i have come to the conclusion that i think that this update maybe a hoax. Trust me i want this just as much as anybody else but after further research i think T-Mobile sold us a beta testing phone so they Google would know how to perfect the Android OS. I hope to goodness that I’m wrong but from the info that i gathered that seems to be the case. But I’m going to keep my fingers crossed on the Jan 15th date but i seriously doubt that it will happen and if it do then I will be the 1st to admit that I’m wrong.

Ok guys this is not another bs comment I have called t mobile a few times today maybe 3 or 4 and the reps keep saying different things the first time I called they said they had not heard of a new update and the last few times they said they heard of it and its not out yet. And that its a major update and its still in development and it could possibly take another month or so. Yes I kno no lies this is what was told to me this is the best answer I could get out of them … so I guess we will be waiting another month or so.. sucks but when it comes it will be worth it … google hurry up where waiting
Listen, you guys can’t just expect the update to come out at 12am. If the update is being released, then it will take a while. There are a lot of G1 users and the update will be sent out in a random fashion. This is how the send out an update, they have a list of G1 customers for example:
John Smith | 8185187361 | address | etc.
Frank Roman | # | address | etc.
And so on and so forth
What. Happens is the update will be sent out randomly one by one until it reaches the last person on the list…So with that being said, we all could have to wait a while. Its only 9:11pm where I am and I really wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t get it tomorrow or today for some of you. It would be nice to at least get it the 16th. That would be a nice birthday present.
Anyways, just be patient. It will arrive, and when it does, you’ll be happy. Chill out for those who keep nagging about it.

Because they said it would be released sometime in the 1rst quater of the year which is jan to april. So I will probably be released at the end of march begining of april cuz tmobile is so slow. Which really sucks cuz I don’t want to wait and who know if it will even be here by then

Okay I have no reason to lie to people whom I’ve never met and I didn’t talk to a rep I talked to a g1 specialist, I asked the rep and she said ill transfer you, so I talked to the g1 one specialist and she said it is true and it is going to be OTA but she said we didn’t have a solid date to when people are going to get it. Hey rosemi I’m not sure about you or everyone here but I did my research on the tmobile website when I was buying my phone and used the tmobile website to look at what features the g1 had and it said video msg ! Now I open my g1 box mess around with my phone show off to my friends and family and about a month later its my wife birthday so I said let me record this and send it to my brother who had just got his g1 and guess what no freaking video! So sorry if we are whining and kicking and screaming but when you spend $179 + tax and $30 a month for the data plan and at the end of the day we got lied to the whining is all we can do oh wait I can do something else like call a lawyer and see if we can file a class action law suit against tmobile for mis leading ads for profit and get it all with the rest of the whining bloggers on here and sit back and have happy convo’s about how the cupcake made of a lot of money. I hate when people blog about us whine or complaining it like they can hear us and we are making their lives hard

hey guys i was speakin with a g1 specialist earlier and she named what the usual cupcake update was offering, but she also said it would have “FLASH” i dont know how very much true this is and i defiantly dont wanna get our hopes any further higher than they alreadi are but i dont know….honestly i dont think she was jerking my chain either because she alarmed me that she had just purchased a G1 and was waiting also!!!! Ok i fianlly going to post something i have talk to a rep about 2 weeks ago and called due to battery problem and she was very helpful and do see a big improvement in my battery life. well she asked me after how i like my g1 one phone and told her i loved but the only thing i got a problem is not having a virtual keyboard and she stated have you seen the g1 forum because there is a update that coming out soon for that. So this is my thought about she mau have gotten her info thru the forums as well due to her as well owning a g1 So maybe she doesnt know for sure she just speculating like we all doing. But i Almost sure it coming out. I doubt tmobile is going to just drop the g1 to try again another phone because if that the case there going to be alot of angry customer that are going to leave tmobile and i sure they dont want what happen to apple when in 4 months the dropped the price to make way for the 3g iphone. meant alot of money given out to iphone that was boguht with the 399 price tag. So i say give it time. it may be this week or next month but i am almost sure it will come.

i spoke with a tmo rep last night at 930 she said cupcake is nothing more than rumors right now and it is currently not supported by tmobile. but she did say that she personaly believes its out there and will eventualy come through for us, but for now she said the big guys over at tmobile have not givin any one in tmo any info on this update so i wouldnt expect anything soon.
I wish people would stop blindly saying cupcake is a fake – it’s clearly real, it’s on Google’s Android roadmap for god’s sake!
The only possibly debatable point would be if it’s going to make it to the G1, and since T-Mobile customer support have confirmed it the only question remaining is when.

We dont have ANY proof that the G1 will get this update, unless you want to take some no-nothing random T-Mobile CSR’s uninformed opinion on the matter as fact. The fact is, every time someone calls T-Mobile they get a different answer as to if it will even come to the G1, ie, they dont know squat about the update. But feel free to continue to use that as fact.
So far, all I’ve seen are rumors and speculation on this blog and elsewhere, and no hard evidence.
@Corbett, I agree – all we have is representatives saying that it’s real. But they would never have acknowledged the update at all if it didn’t exist at all.
Think about it – as a T-Mobile employee why would you tell someone that an update is real if you’ve got no information about it?

@toph, Why the hell wouldn’t the cupcake come out for the G1? It is a legit android enabled device after all, if it going to work with Android, it will work with G1. For everyone that keeps saying the tmobile website lied… I just checked it out and it does not say video capture… just video playback… or the ability to play videos… and video messaging is different from video recording also…

Seriously, Paul Fuckner, Cupcake is real. T-Mobile doesn’t announce anything so people don’t panic in case something goes wrong or is delayed. Everything is tentative, they have to deal with google, htc, cupcake branch (which is is comprised of google and others). Then there is the fact that this is uncharted territory for all involved. Its coming, just those that are crying that they didnt get it midnight need to get a life.

I got an update this morning, popped up in my box as a update and restarted my phone, but then I didn’t see any difference after it restarted. =(

To about phone then you will see a bulid number if it shows rc30 on there then no update
If it shows any past rc30 then it should be cupcake

I just got a replacement battery sent out so im a lil happier now. All i have to do now is get a portable charger which fulls back the battery without plugging in and im good for now.You guys can stop waiting. At least til the end of the month for the final word. Tmobile g1 support said that they have no control over what Google does or when they send it out. They know about the upgrade but as to when it will be release they dont know. So i suggest you all just keep your a check in for each week rather than per hour ok. You guys can relax. I know its something you really really want but you got to learn control until its official. Whenever Google says go and T mobile says users can update now then go. All this speculation needs to stop before you drive your self to death. I have a long time friend that manages and owns a Tmobile kiosk in my mall here in Tampa, FL. He worked for verison for 10 years before he ventured into business himself. His knowledge of what happens is substantial. I have jokingly asked him about any updates to the G1 and he said YESSS!!! I’ll send you the email from tmobile there are 2 of them 1 last month and one last week. When I get it and read it I will give the details. Until then everyone needs to chill I am 24 and a Marine Corps veteran and no discipline is being shown by a lot of you just have fun with your phone as is one day you will wake up and it will possibly work better. There are a lot more things you could dedicate this much time torwards like making care packages for overseas military or even sending them Moto Mail or going to your local VA and saying hi to Iraq veterans. That’s what we need not a dumb update. Semper Fi!!!!

Everyone is complaining in the wrong place. You must take your concern to their Corporate Office or if you really want to get them moving…start hitting other websites and inform everyone not to purchase anymore G1′s and tell their friends, until T-mobile improve the G1 and send out the batteries, as they promise. Also, send out the updates, this month. When you hit a company in their pocket book, that’s when you will see real change.

From what I’ve heard from friends at T-Mobile corporate as well as regional indirect dealers is more realistic estimate is end of January.
Secondly the update that I had commented about earlier in this thread was apparently an update to RC30.
And this in addition was yet ANOTHER thing I learned from one of my buddies.
Public Service Announcement:
When you initially buy your phone, often times your on RC29. After a day or two, your phone will pop up the upgrade thing, and once u say yes, it’ll upgrade to RC30 (current version, not cupcake).
I bought my phone 2 days back and apparently this was my update.

ON the real, i have been waiting for this update since last month, i bought sony bluetooth stereo b4 i even knew there was going to be an update thinking this new high tech phone was capable but noooooooo… my old samsung blast could do it but not the $400 Gphone i bought……. cmon and it didn’t have video recording and no built in flash for the camera… maybe i should have looked up better what was capable of doing..

You know I’ve been thinking… The actual features of the update aren’t that important to me. Don’t get me wrong, cupcake will be sweet when it arrives, and I’m looking forward to it but I’ve never really used video recording on my phones for example, and while the keyboard would be handy I can live without it. I think what I’m really after is the confirmation that this phone is the constantly evolving creature that it was built up to be before launch.
I’ve been glued to this website for a while and all of you guys are calling t-mobile for information when you should be emailing them. By doing this they won’t have to answer the question on the spot (most of them aren’t well informed about the update) and give you a real answer, possibly explaining more. If email doesn’t work stop bothering them because I’m sure they are tired of all of the calls. Just make sure when you send them an email, make sure they can understand your grammar…lol.
BTW, I can’t email myself because I am not the account holder on my phone and I don’t know the password required to send it. I already tried.

here is some interesting news. Well someone posted the t-mo website yesterday and pointed out that it stated video messaging and stuff is a feature of the g1. i was a little fiesty because of dropped calls all day and a shitty battery and had some extra time soooooo this is what i did. I called t-mo and got transfered to g1 departmen. I explained the dropped call situation to them and the crappy battery and listened to their over zealus remarks and there overly insencear appology’s and then i got ugly. I threw in there face that i was a 9 year customer and that its not right for them to charge soooo much for a phone then require a service plan that coasts so much and then lie about the specs of the phone i was very polite and real with the lady and asked to be transfered to her sup. the supevisor was really cool and basically what i did was said that i love t-mo and the g1 and that i use it for work and one of the reasons i bought it is the specs say video play and video messaging are available and there not. they try to tell you that with applications some stuff is pos but i argued that thes features were listed b4 the applications were developed and that its lying and its not right. I was reall nice and polite and acted like i was sincerally hurt and let down that t-mo would decieve coustomers and that while sorry is good it doese nothing to help me with the prices im paying for a phone with options that it does not have. blah blah blah basicallly i had her feeling so guilty that she gave me 2 free months of the 34.99 web package and an 18 dollar credit and that she was gonna let the it people know and that they would look into it. But in the midst of all of it she mentioned that one of the t-mo internal reps had loaded an update rc32 on her g1 and that it did support all types of vido playing and recording but that she could not push it to my phone or get it to me any faster. if you want more details of how i got the free services or how to get them to authorize full upgrades befor timely eligability e mail me at miceli198522@gmail.com and ill explain more. there is an update she didnt say when or where but she also said that in the near future the g2 is going to be released. if you let them think your honestly hurt and let down and make them feel guilty all while being polite they will almost always give you what you want or need. thats my interesting story from yesterday ciao

Everything that the link from michale says is pretty much what i got from my conv yesterday except she said it was rc32 but what ever its called the factws are basically the same. and another comment i have is that the g1 just came out and is doing fairly well with updates and applications. this is a huge improvment that is coming with the cupcake update and its coming relitivally fast so be patiant and soon we will all be happy and content with our purchase of the g1 one again.
I think this whole thing is bullshit. Tmobile has NO imformation on this update and hasn’t even heard about it. And half of them own the G1. I sat on the phone for an hour while tmobile looked at the same exact stuff we are all looking at. If it was rela, wouldn’t they know about it? I’ll believe it when I get it. I have to admit, I waited for days waiting for this update. The important thing to remeber is that the update is to come early January, but this might just be to T-Mobile for distribution. This “LEAKED” imformation may not be for our eyes. We all have to consider that T-Mobile will take this “Update” and use it to their advantange. There will be a phone with no hardward keys and will require the features that we are so eagerly awaiting. Make no mistake…Tmo will come with the media blitz to sell phones. Calling Tmo is like throwing eggs at a castle. They will do what they do and thats make money and as long as we call them to inquire about this UPDATE it reasures their belief in captializing

I received the email I posted I would receive which came forwarded from 4 TMobile operations managers and Tmobile store owners they do not have an exact date but that it will be no later than mid February OTA and will not be everything that cupcake has to offer but will have the majority of the features everyone has heard about it will be coming in as a regular update not a windows 98 to xp pro thing lol just as the RC-30 was incorporated. Fix the big bugs add the bluetooth, video yet no details on its performance, save mms, and some turbo boosters to functionality of basic phone features, browser and java. There was also a clause in the email stating another memo would be sent out soon when it comes I will request it and share the info. Don’t stress phone runs good now just have fun with it don’t check in too often and don’t lose sleep bc you think you will be the first to click I approve upgrade lol if you get it we all will have it before you can even brag so relax and show those iphones what they wish they could be.

Believe it or not that’s what my g1 specialost told me yesterday at 8pm. I called to get my phone switched out due a gps issue and contact sync not working. Gps doesn’t sync anymore and when it did it showed I was in appaloosas. Louisiana… I live in houston…lol.
I asked about the update just being stupid and he rattled off a bunch of text from a memo stating the start date is jan. 27th and it will be phased OTA over 4 weeks so don’t call if I don’t get it on the 27th. Personally im sick of rumors. Tmo should really have made a statement on this. He sounded like he was reading a professional statement not just talking out of his a$$. I hope he was right. In the mean time I got new g1 shipped to me but had to pay 19.99 on my next bill for express shipping. I just need a2dp and flash… jeez it shouldn’t be this hard.

It feautres an on screen keyboard and faster web browsing. It is supposed to be out by the first quarter of the year hopefully by february”

To get a new battery just call customer care and tell them your phone will no longer power on and you have tried you’re battery in another g1 and it wouldn’t power it on either they will send you another FOR FREEEE
well i told dem ma battery is not lasting more than day really…unless i dnt use(no calls or data) ……this wait is unbearable
shit i told them my battey only lasted about 3 to 4 hours and all i got was some bs tips on how to extend the batteries life wich anyone with brains could igure out themselves…like turningoff gps not using video and musc and shit….i told the lady if i cant use the gps and video and musc without worring about my fone dying in a ridiculous amount of time whats the point in having it. she basicly told me it is what it is

yo check this out. I went to bed last night hoping that possibly the rumors were right and we would get an update this morning. I DREAMED about it last night. It was great, everything we want and more. I couldn’t stay in bed past 5am, convinced that I was clairvoyant. Well guess what, I forgot to turn off the GSM and my G1 was DEAD, on the charger no less. I powered up… and… nada. Someone hold me. And while you’re at it, gimme another line of bull, like it’s coming the 25th…NOT.. then the 31st(according to an email from Obama)…going back to sleep now.
i had called the google company and spoke to one of their reps..and they told me that cupcake has changed its name to brownies…wtf yeaa!
heres my opinion on everyones worry about the G2, keep in mind, the G1 has sold amazingly well, the last thing any phone company wants to do, especially in our failure of an economy is stop supporting something that has brought so much revenue, which brings me to cupcake, im not even worried about it, yeah itd be nice to check my phone for missed calls one day and have an update notification staring back at me but why the rush?, as it is everyone from google often states that the code is incomplete, want to know what happends when you release something incomplete, you get 2 stars for your program in the android market (cough)minispacewar(cough, my advice is to sit back relax, and play the living crap out of papijump till an update becaomes avialble

I have nothing to say about cupcake. Never heard of it till I ran across this site. I love my G1. G2 comes out, so what. There will always be another that comes out one step ahead. I work for T-mobile and i own a g1 this is what i found out the update we will receive is NOT called cupcake. “CupCake” is the name of an Android development branch that has now been integrated into the core system. The OTA update we will be receiving is called Release Candidate 31 (RC31). It will include some of the new features developed by the CupCake branch, but not all. The update was targeted for release by Jan. 15, 2009, but that was not possible. The new target is “by the end of the month.” It will be released by region, presumably beginning in the Southwestern US and moving Northeast. If you refuse the update, there is an option to force check for updates via wifi.

Well here we go…samsung and huawei are releasing an android. The G1 and whoever is putting out whatever for it better get it together soon or my top drawer will have another paperweight

my source confirmed there will not be an update anytime soon. An update will be rolling out right before paid app market is launched which is sometimes in the 1st quarter.

What’s funny to me are the people who say stop complaining. Be happy with the g1 as it is. Well, when I pay my money for something($400 phone) I expect to be satisfied. I could call, text, take pics and video with my cheap $50 phone. This g1 was hyped up to be the best phone on the market, but I can’t even record video! I wanted to view cnn tuesday, but oops(No FLASH PLAYER!!!). I had to view a friends iphone(with flash player) and hear him brag about it. When you buy a Benz you automatically assume it will come with certain features that classify it above a hyndai. Any car can go from a to b, but its the luxury ride that we paid for! That’s why we complain.. Where are the standard features this Benz of a phone should have came with?

there is a mailing address on your tmobile bill. if you really want to express your disappointment in tmobile. get a box and ship them your g1 back, and switch carriers. talk and no action gets you just that….no action. this blog should be closed down monday if there is no update.
also a major disappointment abt this **** called g1 is that u can’t send files through the bluetooth. My friend has a crapy phone that only costs abt $30 and he can send and recieve stuff using the bluetooth. Also we need copy and paste feature. And the ability to select multiple things, for example i can’t highlight a number of things to delete’em all at once or so. i’m pissed i’m gonna fart on my g1 now, excuse me

cupcake is still very much a work in progress. It is a development branch, not a release.
This is identical to what the T-Mobile statement said.
The fact that cupcake was merged into the master doesn’t mean the master is now cupcake – it means the master now contains everything that was pioneered in cupcake. But cupcake still is a development branch – albeit hopefully one that will be closed and left undeveloped with the work focusing back on the master so they don’t create any further splits.
The paragraph near the top of the page mentions cupcake’s origins. It was a parallel branch that was used for further development while they took on the task of converting a main code branch into an open source format. They merged it back when they were done with the open source transition, not because the engineers working on cupcake had produced a final solid product-worthy result. So, some “work in progress” that had been going on in a dead end parallel branch was merged into master. That doesn’t mean it is ready for release, and the statement above, quoted both on the cupcake web page and in the memo that Will forwarded to us, clearly states this.

None of those statements are in conflict with each other, though there is some ambiguity when they say “cupcake is a work in progress” I believe they mean that the work that was in cupcake – and which is now living in the master branch – is the work in progress. I don’t think they meant to imply that they will continue working on it in the branch labeled cupcake – that would just continue the fracturing of the code base. They could stand to update the page and say “cupcake was a work in progress at the time it was merged into the master and the results of that merge still represent a work in progress which will continue to evolve in the master repository”. To me, this is just the result of shoddy web page editing – someone updated the line that talked about the timeline of merging and didn’t really look at all of the ways that the milestone of finishing the merge affected the other statements on the page.

We know its real because the freakin 1.5 build is already out to download onto the SDK…I like it!…and people who aren’t patient can root their phones and install it onto your phones…but its going to be limited.

Flash 10 is NOT compatible with Android at this time.
I spoke with a customer service agent and an android specialist 2 days ago asking the same questions all of us have been asking. 1. Any news on Cupcake and flash. 2. Battery Life.
1. Both the customer rep and the android specialist said end of january. They differed on Flash. The rep said Flash was not included but Adobe and android had reached an agreement and the code was ready for a flash player to be downloaded from the adobe site. The specialist said it was supposed to be included.
2. MAybe most importantly and pressing right this minute was the battery life question and the real reasonI called. The rep transfered me to the specialist promising a new battery. Once I got to the specialist who said her husband had the phone and had the same complaint, told me a fix that has seemed to work well ever since.
If you turn off the automatic sync feature the phone will last easily all day with fairly heavy usage of every feature including bluetooth and wifi. The only problem I have found with it, is that my e-mail doesn’t get checked every 5 minutes. I just manually check it or turn the auto sync on every 3-4 hours to sync everything so its not a killer. It has allowed me to surf the internet, play games, make phone calls, and use the map feature without having to recharge except over night.
Hope some of this info helps.

Its now February and no OTA update has been provided by T-Mobile to my knowledge.
The cop out I have heard is blaming the delay to layoffs, presumably those at Google which shifted resources away from Android although I haven’t heard of any layoffs from T-Mobile publicly.
not to sound messed up but i think every one should stop caring about this update . the apps in the market basically do what we want already. the blue tooth thing and flash player , yes is needed but is not a dying need . i fell into the cupcake thing for a while . waited for the 15 and got nothing and stopped bothering with it and than just wondering how this has turned out , its back to being out of hand . t-mobile sucks most of us no that , and we allllllll know they fuck ups when they try to make some thing or do some thing or push some thing out . just look at this fone , we didnt even have a virtual keyboard because dey thought ppl wudnt want 1 since we had a slide out . look at side kicks , 8 are done , still doesnt have any thing good but aim . thats just t-mobile and it will always be this way . cupcake will come when it does . until then make an app that fixes the problem you see , down load apps or keep moving or just keep going threw dis page day in and out while u look at ur fones and found nothing 2 look at but da back of da home screen and apps on it … peace
The download of the Google G1 Android cupcake update is now available. The update has new features and various bug fixes.
The update features varous bug fixes but the most interesting features are video recording as well as playback and Bluetooth stereo support.
The update also has new browser features, such as copy/paste and quick search, and a full on-screen QWERTY keyboard.

This is just my opinion. I’ve been watching the developers’ platforms that are being released for open source. I’m currently downloading the code and see that they are still updating code. ‘Cupcake’ is not ready for release. It looks like they are trying to work out all the bugs so that what we all get does not need additional fixes (like Windows software). Consider this, if you were cooking cupcakes, would you take them out earlier to eat them? For all we know they could be just adding the frosting, and maybe some sprinkles for appearance. Place your phone on 450 and wait. It’s like Christmas when you were a kid, you can’t wait to open your gifts, but that what makes it that much more sweeter when you do. If you REALLY can’t wait, get Linux and download the code.
Bad news guys, looks like the next update won’t be ‘cupcake’ – though it might include elements since it’s not been confirmed what’s in it specifically.

No I havent rooted my G1 as I personally wouldn’t recommend it unless you really know what you are doing.
I simply use the emulator on my PC to play around with Android.

I got the RC33 yesterday and I think is sucks!!! All we are going to get is a bunch of worthless and useless crap. Hey here is an update to where you can save pics from sms. Cram it in your cram hole T-Mobile and Google. I like this phone but I am falling farther and farther from it everyday! Whats that you say we have voice search now? SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK it doesn’t work half the time. Have you all seen the crappy apps on the market? OMG suckity suck suck!!!! I would rather pay for really good ones than look that this!! I am in Portland Oregon. Got it around 7.30 pm on 7th
It gives 2 options
1) Update now
2) Update later
When you hit “Update now”, it starts updating and takes about less than 5 mins to download install and reboot
The only change I have seen is the Google search voice
I tested it with an easy name “Obama”
No matter how hard I try to say it clearly, it comes back with “Oklahoma”
I dont know what other features have been installed but I will check against the checklist that Michael has posted before

Xda-developers.com is all you need to know, modes,themes,move apps to Sdcard;) go there and see what the G1 really can do with modded updates that my grandmother could do.
Just got update here in boston…few other people I know got it here too today.Got everything it said it would deliver,but I went from 20 mb to 12 mb internal memory…wtf?That’s what I was looking forward to…

please help lol well i updated my own phone to rc33 and it was easy so i got the balls to try to root my phone wich requires downgrading to rc29 which was easy but the rest of the instructions were so vauge and speratic that i dont wanna take the chance of bricking my phone and now…. i cant figure out how to go from rc 29 to rc 33 or even rc30 where i could then go to 33 help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:
On RC29 phones and lower, anything you type into your keyboard is also being run in a hidden console with root permissions. More information regarding that at the bottom of this post. But, to get root access, do the following:
Instructions:
1. Download recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone’s SD card).
2. Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
3. All files must be on the root of your SD card.
4. Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
5. After your phone starts up, type “telnetd” and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don’t worry. Just type it.)
6. Download an Android “Telnet” application from the Market and connect to localhost.
7. If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt “#”.
8. Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
* mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* cd sdcard
* flash_image recovery recovery.img
* cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
Now you have root!

Hard Reset after making sure you sync all your info (and you will lose your apps)

ok lol well i tried the factory reset thing but it reset me to the rc29 version that i had downgraded to but…….. finally i have after 2 days figured everything out and am running the jf 1.41 and it rocks. thanks to everyone for their little tidbits i stole a little bit from everyone and to tell you the truth the multi tuch itself is worth the work. i can try to help anyone out if you wanna try the update just ask me any questions about the jf 1.41 ask away im not sure what all it intails but im playing with it now

I got new cupcake update and here is the news Music system now screwed up they introduce new stereo bluetooth music listening but rest is gone like regular headphone not working and while you are listening music if any phone call comes than no headset will work untill you restart. I am very frustated.
Me too! Music comes on now whenever the jack is used, can I turn the music applicaton off? I don’t even use the bluetoothe stereo!
