Play Flash games on your Android

by on February 8, 2011

Flash games are a great pastime of college kids who came of age in the late 90s and early 00s. They’re beautifully simple and provide endless hours of addictive entertainment. Yet for the most part they’re not available for play on your Android device, even if you’re running Froyo and therefore have Adobe Flash Player. But Android has a community of laudable developers who think of issues like this. And then they solve them. The latest comes from xda member |OP|, whose StegDroid app we featured last week. He has created a way for us to play or favorite Flash games on our Android devices, even if the game developer hasn’t created an Android version yet. You’ll of course need Android 2.2 or higher, and you’ll need to have Adobe Flash 10.1 installed. If you have all that, you can download the app, which allows you to play any Flash game (.swf format). Oh, and you’ll also need an SD card, because the games are stored there. That means offline playing, too, which is always useful for the commuter who spends much of her time underground. You can also load games from the 2D Tsunami database. Anyway, once you’ve got all that set up, you can head to the Market and download the app. Once you have the app up and running you can change the controls on a game-by-game basis. That’s pretty key, since a universal set of keys might not work the same way on a mobile device as it does on your computer. This works with both touchscreen and slider keyboard devices — though I have to say that I’m not so in love with the controls on the virtual device. It seems as though this would work a bit better with a physical keyboard. If you want to start playing your favorite Flash games, you can grab this app from the Market. (I love that I can link to the Market now.)

Man, too bad he doesn’t have a way to make Flash work on an LG Vortex. I guess the CPU isn’t powerful enough.

Bummer.
