Who would have thought that your Android smartphone could help you complete home improvement projects? It might not help you tighten a screw or loosen a bolt, but it sure can play the part of workman’s assistant. Thanks to the wide array of apps available in Google Play, you can find the perfect ones to help you the next time you’re doing something as complex as plumbing, or as simple as covering up dings and dents in drywall.
Here are five of our favorites to help you out with your next home improvement project.
1. Home Improver Pro (free)
Before you dive into any home improvement project you’ll want to know how much it will cost you. Moreover, you’ll want a sense of how much time it will take. After all, you wouldn’t want to start an 18-hour project when you only have five hours available on a given weekend. The Home Improver Pro provides estimates for many different projects. That way you’ll have an estimate of how much time and money you’ll need to spend on a project before you begin. It is available for Android Jelly Bean, so all users can jump on this free app.
2. iHandy Carpenter ($1.99)
Sometimes you just don’t want to lug around that big box of tools. If your project is short and sweet, your Android smartphone might be able to replace some of those tools. The iHandy Carpenter app contains a surface level, a plumb bob for measuring vertical lines, a protractor, and a ruler. They’re not quite as precise as their physical counterparts, but again, for quick projects there might be no better option.
3. The Home Depot (free)
There are three basic steps to any home improvement project: 1. Draw up a plan, 2. Buy materials, 3. Perform actions. While the Home Depot app won’t do you much good with the third step — it’s difficult to imagine it helping with water heater installation — it can help plenty with the first two. Search the Home Depot inventory for materials that you’ve planned out. Then you can buy them, either for shipment to your home or pickup in the store. The less time you spend browsing the aisles, the more time you spend working on the project.
4. Easy Home Improvement Tips (free)
One of the most valuable roles your Android smartphone can play in any home improvement project is as a research assistant. Keep it on your tool belt and you can instantly answer questions as you’re working on the project, so you don’t have to leave the site to consult a book or the web. The Easy Home Improvement Tips app provides information you can access at any time, any place, with your Android smartphone.
5. Make Your Home (free)
Sometimes you just want some inspiration, or some ideas for a remodeling project. Those ideas can come from something as simple as looking at pictures. Looking for a quick gallery of beautiful home modeling and remodeling ideas? Make Your Home has a library of hundreds of images that are bound to provide you with that big idea you’ve been seeking.
